Whooha Gear is my go to favorite for lifestyle tees & tanks.  I’ve long been a fan of their clothing line, optimistic attitudes and their “Believe, Achieve, Inspire” type quotes.  Each piece is branded “Play Hard, Take Chances & Keep Smilin’”.  Why, yes, I will!  Factor in the low prices & great selection and now you know why I’m hooked.  Smile

Some of my Whooha Gear collection is below.  I pulled these from the archives so you won’t see all of them in the current lineup.  I’ve added a link to the ones that are still available.   I wear these pieces nonstop. If you travel with me, you may be tired of looking at them but no worries, I got a few new ones for our future trips!!!

Regret Nothing Slub Tee

whooha_regret nothing

As you can tell, I’ve been collecting for a while and I’ve just added two new ones this week.  The Chase Your Dreams Slub Tee and the Be Yourself Slub Tee. Michael loves the “don’t follow your dreams, chase them” tee.  He insisted on taking a pic.  So “Hello” from Mr. Michael!!  I’m a huge fan too.  Wore that one yesterday & today I’m wearing the Be Yourself.  BE strong, humble, true, happy, inspired, fearless, kind, bold, selfless, hopeful, courageous, love, consistent, graceful, disciplined, bright, brave and wise. Just BE yourself.  I couldn’t say it better myself.  We are all different.  That’s the great thing about everyone.  Don’t be afraid to BE you!

Favorite Things …… 2013 Edition

Every year as the holidays approach, readers start asking for a list of my favorite things.  This year I haven’t found a ton of NEW run things that I love but I do have a few favorites.

image

My favorite lifestyle tees this year are the Whooha Gear, Regret Nothing tee ($24) & the Tough Chik, I Run Because tee ($22), which is actually on my wish list!  Both of these are inexpensive items that deliver a message.  The bold, neon orange Regret Nothing tee is one of my absolute favorites that I wear constantly (and you can still use the INSPIRE discount code for 10% off).  However the “Run Because” tee holds a special spot in my heart.  Shannon from Tough Chik sent out a poll asking ladies for the reason as to why they run.  All of the quotes in the heart of that tee are from MY friends, YOUR friends, and random Tough Chiks everywhere.  We may not all run for the same reason but we will run united as Tough Chiks FOREVER!

Whooha_regret nothing    image

My favorite running items this year?  The Asics Emma Racerback ($34) & the Athleta Relay Capris.  My “Emma” is always dirty.  As soon as it comes upstairs from the wash, I pull it for a treadmill run.  The butter soft, lightweight fabric makes this baby the BEST shirt I own for a hot, sweaty workout.  They have three colors, I only own the Energy Print but would definitely buy more if I didn’t feel guilty cuz my workout wardrobe is larger than what most people own for “everyday wear”.  My go to “bottoms” are always the Athleta Relay Capri pants ($69).  You can say what you want about how costly the Athleta items are but these capris stand the test of time.  I only add one pair of capri’s to my “collection” every year and well, I’m still wearing the original black ones that I bought 4-5 years ago.  I’ve since added navy, cobalt blue, asphalt and the new sandstone inkblot ($74) to my closet.  They come in tall and standard sizes, fit perfectly, don’t move when I run and they also have a zip pocket in the back that is large enough for my iPhone.  I don’t own any other capri pants cuz these are perfect and stylish.  Total win!

Emma Racerback   veterans_me & Kasey   me_after 20 miles (march 2013)_blue lock laces

Something that’s been on my wish list for a LONG time, is a pair of aviator sunglasses.  Why?  Cuz all the cool kids wear them and well, lots of fast runners in my area do too.  Somehow my brain now equates aviator sunglasses with cool people who run fast.  Yeah, let’s just go with it.  Since it’s no secret that it’s hard to find a pair of sunglasses to fit this oblong, skinny face, I thought I was out of luck …… until I saw that Smith Pivloc was making a “slim” version of their Serpico style.  Enter into my world the Smith Pivloc Serpico Slims ($90-$119).  According to Aby, it doesn’t matter what sunglasses I wear, I’ll never be cool, or fun and she is NOT amused.  Sorry, Aby.  Actually, no, I’m not sorry.  I will continue to embarrass you for THE.REST.OF.YOUR.LIFE.  Love you, babe!

Smith Optics_SerpicoSlim  me & Aby_nov 2013_serpico slim

Last but not least, I have to cover the feet.  My feet take me EVERYWHERE and for that reason, I don’t wear cheap shoes (or socks!).   When I’m not running, or hanging with the kiddos, then I’m probably downtown in the Windy City for the J.O.B.  It gets cold downtown fast.  And stays cold forever.  I need a boot that is comfortable, stylish and can take me thru the snow & ice then directly into the office.   My boot of choice for the 2013-2014 winter season is the Keen Bern Baby Bern Boot ($170).  Love these bad boys!  They are light and comfy, keep my feet warm but also don’t cause my feet/legs to overheat either, which is super important if your day ends up as long as most of mine.  I’ve already worn them several times this season and they are the best boots I’ve owned to date.  One day last week I put them on at 5am and wasn’t able to take them off til 7pm.  Long day but my feet felt great, no rubbing, no fatigue, just happy feet!

Whooha Gear GIVEAWAY!

I had a crappy weekend.  First off, there was the bad race at Great Illini where the temps soared over 100 degrees and my bike tires and shoes stuck in the tar.  Apparently nobody received the memo that heat/humidity is my kryptonite.  Second, I was struck with a full blown allergy attack that left my face swollen and haggard looking.  SO, let’s get things back on the happy track and do a giveaway!!!  WhooooHoooooo!!!  Or should I say, WhoooooooHaaaaaaa!

Whooha Gear has been one of my favorite retailers over the last couple of years.  I have multiple pieces from them ranging from butter soft tees to a loose fitting hoodie that I wear everywhere. Good stuff (you can see my last post on Whooha Gear HERE).   Whooha is a small women owned company offering products for other women athletes with the intent to help inspire other women.  That’s a winning philosophy in my book!

WHOOHA = Women Having Optimistic Objectives & Healthy Attitudes

I have two items from the new 2013 line and I have several more things on my “wish list”.  I picked up the “Regret Nothing” tee (Play Hard, Take Chances, Keep Smilin) at the Zooma Chicago expo.  I haven’t seen this orange one online yet but they have it and if you want to call them, I bet they will get you one!!

Whooha_regret nothing

Then last week, I received this baby in the mail right before heading out to the disastrous Great Illini 70.3.  The Swim, Bike, Run Heartbeat tee:

Whooha_swim bike run

I’ve never been much of a t-shirt person but these don’t feel like traditional tees.  They are soft, form fitting but not super tight and they move with me.  I’m not only comfortable in them but love the message and designs.  I have basically been wearing them around the clock which is why I don’t have a photo of me in the orange tee cuz it’s always headed to the wash when I’m not working or exercising.

Do you want to win a Whooha shirt or hoodie?  Whooha has generously agreed to give one winner their pick from the website.  Yes, anything.  You pick what you like and what fits your style!   Go look around HERE and leave me a comment below telling me what you will pick if you win.  If you would like a second entry into the giveaway, go like the Whooha Facebook page and leave a comment below telling me you did so and please provide your FB name for verification purposes.

One winner will be drawn on Friday, September 6th at 9am.  GOOD LUCK!

And if you can’t wait to win, then please shop HERE  using the discount code:  INSPIRE for 10% off your order.

Don’t forget to “Play Hard, Take Chances & Keep Smilin”!

Zooma Chicago Half Marathon Race Review ……

The Zooma Women’s Series came to Chicago on Saturday for the inaugural event.   Zooma Chicago offers both a Half Marathon and 10K run.  It is a ladies race that is geared toward bringing women runners together with an entire fitness focused weekend.

The fun started with a small expo at the swanky Langrahm Hotel

Zooma_langrahm lobby            Zooma_langrahm_hall

We were able to mix, mingle and shop with several vendors and I was excited to see a few of my all time favorites:  Whooha Gear and the lovely Dimity and Sarah from Another Mother Runner.  I “may” have purchased a few things.  The new “Regret Nothing” tee from Whooha Gear and the “I Run Things” tee from Another Mother Runner.  Both of these fit me to a “tee”.  Smile

image   image

Zooma can easily claim the prize for the best swag bag in town.  Our goodie bags included a navy women’s specific performance tech shirt with a cool logo, a beautiful water bottle that Aby already stole for Cross Country, a yoga mat & cool reusable bag.

Zooma_bag        Zooma_SWAG

The race venue was at Montrose Harbor on Saturday morning.  This is a massive area that is really hopping on the weekends.  However, it was easy to spot the venue as it was close to Lake Shore Drive and not too far into the park.  I was easily able to unite with my fellow Team Tough Chik members, the Chicago Running Bloggers and the Zooma Ambassadors and hit the start line on time.

Fellow Toughie – Margaret, Casey, Nicki & Myself:

Chicago Running Bloggers:

Zooma_Chicago Running Bloggers

The race started right on time at 7:00am with both the Half Marathon and 10K runners starting together.   The event was chip timed and the course was primarily on Chicago Park District property, thru various parks and on the Lakefront Path.

Without getting into my personal race which was merely a race from one potty to the next I’ll break the event down by Pros and Cons.

Pros

  • Ladies Only
  • Amazing SWAG Bag
  • Vendors who work to empower and encourage women of all shapes, sizes & skill levels
  • Free shuttles to/from host hotel
  • Small Race for first timers with 652 half marathon finishers & 311 finishers for the 10K
  • Large Venue that is easy to find
  • Lots of public parking if you get there early
  • Lots of people on the public park & lakefront paths so that you don’t feel “alone”
  • Lots of shade thru said parks

Zooma_lake front path

  • Aid stations with potties every 2-3 miles
  • Cocktails and a boxed lunch at the finish
  • Cool PR medals to all those running the distance for the first time or crushing a new PR
  • Lovely Finisher’s Pendant that Aby already claimed as her own

Zooma_necklace    Zooma_necklace2

Cons

  • Costly, early bird registration was $105 for the half
  • Packet pick up was at a downtown Chicago hotel so parking was an issue
  • Course was on heavily populated trails during prime usage time for marathon training & recreational use for local residents
  • Non Zooma participants weren’t excited to have us on location, and “may” have yelled obscenities at us
  • Course was confusing in spots without proper signage or race marshals for direction.
  • Half & 10K courses crossed at times creating more confusion
  • Boring – Felt like a training run with so much chaos and so many non race participants milling around
  • Most runners expected an out and back lakefront run with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and we only had one small section, which we ran 2x, that offered the beauty of the Chicago lakefront.

Zooma_lakefront path 1

Overall, I liked everything about Zooma Chicago other than the actual 2013 course.  I’m hoping they make a change for 2014 so that our ladies have a bit more direction and also space to run or walk as they please.

Note to those who use the Chicago Lakefront Path – Please respect one another.  I’ve now on several occasions had the opportunity to personally witness certain users of the path yelling at, or being rude to others.  It’s a public path.  Share.  Your activity is not MORE important than anyone else’s.  In some instances, it’s absolutely impossible to “GET OUT OF THE WAY”.  I’m sorry.  I’d move if I could because I don’t want you to run me down.  You are making us locals look bad and quite frankly you downright scared some of my Zooma friends.  I’m embarrassed.  Grow up and take your rage to a more appropriate venue, like the boxing ring.

Favorite Things….2012 Edition

Christmas may not be on your mind but it is on the mind of some, myself included.  I’ve been asked to identify a few of my favorite things as a few ladies I know are starting to pen their Christmas lists.

My current absolute favorite thing is the new GPS Running Watch for Dummies Garmin Forerunner 10.  At $129, I believe that this is the best bang for your buck on the GPS Running Watch market.  I own the green one.  Aby put a pink one on her Christmas list.  This is a simple device that doesn’t create a mountain of data that you don’t have time to study anyhow out of your run.  What you do get is a constant update of your time, pace and distance.  There is also a virtual pacer, which will tell you that you are constantly behind, ahead or on your desired pace.

image

Aurelia & I’s run last night is below.  We both had tired legs and were talking non-stop but damn we were consistent!

   Garmin_green_run stats     Garmin_green_splits

  • Smallest, most comfortable GPS watch on the market for women.
  • It fits my arm very well and I can actually wear the watch all day long.
  • Looks somewhat fashionable in a casual sense.
  • Uploads to the Garmin Connect, shows a map of the run, plus mile splits (but I personally can’t get it to connect to Daily Mile).
  • Device records 7 runs before overwriting, so don’t be lazy about uploading or you’ll lose the data if you care
  • Device records “Run Records” for the fastest mile, 5K, 10K, Half, & Full marathon.
  • Auto pause feature which pauses the time/pace/gps when you need to hit the bathroom/stretch then it automatically starts back up when you get moving again.

Second, you know I love the Wrist Saver (starting at $12.95) from Personal Savers.  They are currently running a Facebook Special for the next 3 days and if you buy a Personal Saver product, you get a free (refill) bottle of pepper spray.  Discount Code:  FB-FREE-PEPPER

Personal Saver _FB special

 WristSaver_pink_me

Third, Whooha Gear products.  I love the things I own in addition to their message.  I did a recent post and giveaway HERE.  This purple I Run Burnout Hoodie for $40 is on my Christmas list.  I’m hoping that Santa buys me a large using the 10% off coupon code:  TTFWhooha

image

Fourth, another wish list item of mine is this pair of Keen – Laken High Boots that I have been stalking “watching”.  At $190, they are a bit outside my budget and probably Santa’s but hey, this is a WISH list, so I can wish!  Plus, with our cold, windy Chicago winters, I think I actually NEED a pair of these or at least that’s what I’ll be telling Santa.  🙂

image

If Santa can’t afford the Keen Laken’s above, then my second choice which isn’t that much cheaper would be these Keen Sunriver High Boots at $130.  These cute purple boots (more color options)  also just so happen to match the purple I Run Burnout Hoodie that’s also on my list.

image

Last but not least, I have several new favorites from Brooks Running.  Aby and I have the Nightlife Essential LS 1/2 Zip for $65.  It’s bright, plus very soft and has a great fit.  There are other color options if you’re not into pink.  I wore it for the Hot Chocolate race and I think it helped others pick me out of that massive crowd, see the crappy lit photo below.  🙂

                image       image

The Brooks Pure Cadence are another favorite at $120.  I have two pair of these (different colors) but I prefer the bright pink color.  These aren’t my training shoes but I love them for short races!  They are cute, flashy and they are comfortable enough to wear all day long if necessary.  Win, Win!

Brooks Pure Cadence_pink     Hot Choc_2012_Nicki Me Pam

Since running makes me happy, I’m of course drown to the Brooks Run Happy campaign.  Therefore, I grabbed one of the EZ T LS Run Happy shirts off the women’s sale section for $23.  They have several color options but I picked the orange.

Always remember when shopping online to first check the sale, clearance or last chance sections before making a final decision.   You can get a lot of great deals in the sale section and save some serious cash!

Good luck making your wish list!  Remember your blessings and do your best to not get swept up in Holiday Fever.  I personally pledge to limit my holiday spending to fit within my budget.  I pledge to cut back on a few expenses now in order to have a cash Christmas so as not to have extra debt hanging over my head at the start of the new year.  I pledge to remember my local charities/food pantries this holiday season and throughout the year.

I wish each and every one of you a joy filled, healthy and happy holiday season!

Whooha Gear Giveaway…….

Whooha = Women Having Optimistic Objectives & Healthy Attitudes

Aurelia R. introduced me to Whooha Gear about 6 months ago and I immediately fell in love.  Although their acronym is a mouthful unusual, the words speak to me.  Plus the gear is amazing.  Normally fit is an issue for me and I was pleasantly surprised when the first item I ordered fit the first time.  I was even more surprised that it was also something that I actually wanted to wear.  If you know me, and know me well, you know that I return about 90% of the items I order online and I give away another 5%.  My success rate with clothing is very low.

In addition to my love of the fit and feel of Whooha, I am also in love with the company motto and focus.  This is directly from the Whooha homepage:

image Inspire yourself…that is the goal Whooha Gear has set for you! Started by two women athletes, Whooha Gear provides athletic wear made for women by women. Our shirts and accessories have inspirational sayings for active women that range from runners, climbers, triathletes, cyclists, hikers and much, much more.

My first Whooha item purchased was the Doesn’t Hurt to TRI V-Neck Heather Tee which is currently on close out for $20.  I paid “full” price, which was $24.  That’s reasonable in my opinion.  It’s also soft and fits my “curves” without hugging me inappropriately.

Whooha_blue shirt    image

image

I’ve worn this Doesn’t Hurt to TRI Tee several times, including to work on a Friday the Ironman Muncie 70.3 expo where a woman seriously ran me down to find out where I had gotten this shirt.   It’s cute and chick at the same time, plus feels comfortable enough that I actually don’t mind it being a t-shirt.  I normally won’t ever wear a t-shirt, not even for running or workouts.  I’m very picky, but this I love!  🙂

After the above shirt being torn to shreds by jealous women at the Ironman expo such a huge hit in Muncie, I finally ordered another one.  Ironically, I like this one even more than the first!  My second purchase was the TRI & Triumph Triblend Scoop Neck.  Once again I paid full price at $24.  This shirt looks and feels amazing and I have to consciously wear something different on the weekends so people don’t see me in the same shirt over and over.  LOVE.THIS.SHIRT.  Its super soft and fits perfectly with a little flare at the tummy so it doesn’t stick to my rolls mommy tummy.  Thank you, Whooha!

Whooha_red shirt    image

image

You “might” want to go browse around the Whooha site yourself because they have generously agreed to let the winner of the giveaway PICK THEIR OWN ITEM!!!  The main shopping section is HERE, which includes a lot of closeouts and everything is priced reasonably. Currently, my favorite product is the I Run Burnout Hoodie, which I don’t own yet, but I’m hoping Santa will bring it for me in a size large.
