Another great, family friendly event is quickly approaching!  On July 15th, the 5th Annual Strike Out ALS 5K will be held at US Cellular Field.   This is a must run event if you are a White Sox Fan!  2014 promises some new things as an incentive for local fans:

2014 Race Incentives 

1st, 2nd and 3rd place fundraisers will receive on field recognition at the White Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles game on Monday, August 18th

4th and 5th place finishers will receive an autographed baseball by Gordon Beckham and Adam Dunn

Anyone that raises $250 or over will receive a Comcast Ticket Voucher for an upcoming Chicago White Sox Game

The 2014 event also boosts a new course with entertainment at each mile plus a post race party with a local band! 

Most importantly, this is more than a family friendly event at a cool venue.    This is a massive fundraising effort for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  While I was introduced to this fast moving disease at an early age, many don’t know much about ALS.  Description below:  

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease (MND), is a progressive disease that causes muscle weakness, difficulty speaking and swallowing and generally, complete paralysis. In most cases, while the body continues to deteriorate, the mind remains unaffected. The disease does not discriminate, striking any age, gender and race. In the US, someone is diagnosed every 90 minutes, and approximately 35,000 people are living with ALS at any given time. There is no known cure for ALS and once diagnosed, patients typically live only three to five years.

Fellow Flowers Mother Day Giveaway

So many amazing companies out there!  Today I want to talk about one which I have yet to share publicly.  Fellow Flowers.  If you don’t recognize the name, you may recognize the flowers!

The running and racing scene is now flooded by ladies sporting colorful flowers clipped into ponytails, onto visors or headbands and ultimately showing support for each other.  Each flower color represents something unique and is a statement on it’s own.  Women everywhere have fallen in love the the Fellow Flowers message of friendship, passion and enjoying the journey regardless of where it may lead.  The flowers unite friends and strangers a like.   The message keeps the community constantly “blooming”.

I tested these out during the Derby Festival Marathon in Louisville a couple weeks ago.  The kids were in a hotel room waiting for me to finish running.  I needed to be connected and available to help them and also be able to threaten keep Mr. Michael in line.   Plus there were times when I needed a few tunes to keep me moving.  These worked great, plus they are sweat/water resistant!!!  The kids called me 2 times and Aby probably texted me 10x.  I was able to respond immediately, each and every time.  I’m wearing them in this picture below. I wore them for about 20 miles of the race and they didn’t bother me at all.  Big win!!

Fundraising RAFFLE for RMHC & the 2014 Chicago Marathon!

Time to get this party started!  It’s Shamrock Shuffle weekend and spring is on the way whether it likes it or not.  The Shamrock is the official kickoff of the Chicago racing season that culminates with the Chicago Marathon.   This year the Chicago Marathon will take place on October 12, 2014.  And it will be massive, just like always.

The marathon will bring world-class athletes, rising stars, talented age groupers, experienced marathoners and beginners alike.  So many want to come here, to run the streets of Chicago.  For the very first time in the Chicago Marathon history, the marathon has gone to a lottery system.  Yes, there are so many people who want to run the Chicago Marathon that we actually crashed the system last year.  Therefore, it has been decided that if one would like to run in 2014, they need to have guaranteed entry via a charity (like RMHC and yes, we still have spots available!!), a legacy of 5 CHI marathons or more, or a super fast time (3:45 for women, 3:15 for men).   Everyone else hits the lottery and good luck to YOU, if that’s your chosen path.

For me, I can’t imagine NOT running the Chicago Marathon since its in my backyard, so I decided to run with Ronald McDonald House Charities once again.  They are an outstanding organization.  I believe in their cause and am always amazed with the number of families they help every  year, both here in Chicago and around the world.  It wasn’t a difficult decision at all for me to sign up with them again for 2014.
