On My 7th Day of No Running…..

On my 7th day of NO RUNNING my truelove continues to distract me!  This running hiatus came at an odd time as Hubby and I are also enjoying a mini “stay”cation without the kiddos.  So we have been running around like fools in an attempt to distract me from thinking about running have fun and enjoy ourselves and not worrying about whether Michael is climbing my sister’s curtains and jumping from the top of her stairs do a few things that we normally can’t fit into our busy kid friendly schedules.  On Day 1 of staycation, we went shopping, plus had dinner & drinks.  I know this sounds totally lame isn’t exciting to most of you but shopping with the kiddos is a chore and not fun.  Plus, we bought lots of fun things for ME!  Yay!

And there is not even one remotely running related item in that loot pile.  I know most people had running things on their Christmas List but running for me is different. I’ve been doing it for a long time so I don’t really have a wishlist.  I buy a few pieces of clothing each year to add to my collection but already have all the big items.  So I did get a few pair of compression socks for Christmas but basically have what I need otherwise.

Day 2 of staycation was blinging it up,  wearing some of my new loot and hitting the local NON-Smoking casinos.  Illinois is non-smoking so better and easier to stay local so as not to have to deal with the nasty smoke from the Indiana & Michigan casinos.Hollywood Casino (formally Empress) had a beautiful tree!

We were also able to bring home some $$ between Harrahs & Hollywood!  Love it when I have black chips in my possession.  I never spend them, just hoard hold onto them so I feel special.  I had used most of the green by this point and was heading to cash out so we could move on for more fun.

Do you ever opt for a local “stay”cation over the big price tag of airfare/hotel in a new and different city?  We seem to take this option a lot now with the dogs kiddos.  First, we have 3 dogs that don’t like to be boarded so we end up begging a friend to stay at the house when we are out-of-town to “dog-sit” which is a PITA.  Secondly, we never have much time.  Why waste a ton of  $$ to go somewhere for 3 days?  Thirdly, we live in a great area in that there is a bunch of things to do in the CHI.  Fourth, Mom couldn’t get anymore time off work this year so we couldn’t ask her to come and watch the kids/dogs here I like to sleep in my own bed.  So vacation or staycation?

Cheers!                                                                                                                            Amanda – TooTallFritz

What’s for Dinner?

One of the very few perks of working in a downtown office is easy access to the lake front path for lunchtime runs  the holiday treats.  I know I have already mentioned that I have done poorly okay, really bad this year on avoiding the treats, in fact I have been seeking them out!  Yum, Yum, Yum….and I’m +2 on the scales too, if you must  know.  Not good, but Yum, Yum, Yum.  Well, today marks the last work day of the year for many people.  Julie and I will still be slaving away in the office tomorrow if you must know but MOST will be off tomorrow, Monday and possibly all of next week.  Well, at 2:30pm today we received another shipment delivery of holiday goodies.  More than ANY small office could consume.  Two of these…….

Lot of cookies, more than I have seen since last year’s delivery.  And yes, I brought one home.  Should have just said NO.  But I couldn’t.  It’s for Me & Jeni H. the kiddos on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, right?  We will see how long they last.  We already took a sampling.  Notice a few missing?  Maybe….hurry over to get yours!

And of course, I pulled off all the Lindor Truffles for my own personal stash safe keeping.

My stash looks more like this:

And since I have already ingested enough calories today to support a small family, might as well wash it all down with a few of these:Yeah, I’m not cooking tonight.  It’s cookies, Lindor Truffles & Amstel Light….or the fam can dig some leftovers out of the fridge.

What are you having for dinner?  Or are you stopping by here to share my stash?  Come on over, I’ll be wrapping the rest of the presents other than the Santa gift for Aby that will probably never arrive.

Winter Solstice 2011

Winter Solstice begins tonight at 11:30 pm.  So what did we do to celebrate?  We ran.  What is my favorite way to celebrate any occasion?  Running and drinking.  I ran with the F’N Running Club then they went to the bar and drank.  At least it was 50/50 success ratio for me and the “celebration”.

Tonight/Tomorrow marks the climb up OUT OF THE DARKNESS toward daylight and spring.  The shortest day of 2011 will soon be in the done column and I’m happy about it.  Although it has yet to get cold and nasty in the CHI, and we have not had any snow, the darkness just lingers.  In fact, according to the numbers we currently have 6 hours and 6 minutes LESS daylight than during the Summer Solstice in June.  It certainly is nice to think about June right now but the current reality is darkness.  Most of us get up, go to work and come home in darkness.  Unless you are retired, or a SAHM with an awesome friend/family member to help out with the kiddos, most of your runs have been in the dark.  I hope you broke down and bought the KnuckleLights or goaded someone into buying them for you for Christmas!

Most of the F’N Running Club does have KnuckleLights, head-lamps, flashers/blinkers, etc. now for safety so we were back at it tonight for our usual Wednesday Night Run.  We tried to make it a Christmas Run but not everyone had festive attire.  That’s okay, 8 people showed up to run in the dark……  Me, Susan, Jeni, Brian P., Kathy, Vera & Maggie

I picked up those festive socks for $5 at Target. Lots of different styles!

Brian F., Jeni, Susan, Brian P., Kathy, & Vera

The group ran between 3 and 5 miles and then headed to the bar at varying paces.  We really enjoyed our visitor from Boston, Vera, who is a long time friend of Maggie‘s.  Had to get a pic of them together.  Those long-lasting friendships tear me up really rock!  Love the hat too, Vera!

4.0 miles – 34:51 for  me, no stops other than for traffic at road crossings.  This will be my last run until the NYE 5K in Matteson.  I have decided that it’s in my best interest to give my right foot a rest.  Although the orthotics and cortisone shot have done wonders in eliminating the heel pain, I have noticed now that the heel pain is gone I also have some other issues.  The outer bone on my right foot is shooting pain when I walk or run.  Although it probably didn’t help that I fell down the stairs with Michael in the dark on FRI this is a set back, I need some time off to evaluate if this is just an aggravation in conjunction with Plantar Fasciitis or if it is something independent.  So, no running til NYE, then we will see how the foot fairs after a fast 5K…..at least I hope it’s kinda fast.

Think happy thoughts for me and my bum foot!  I shall return.  Big things for 2012 and I want to be healthy.

Cheers!                                                                                                                             Amanda – TooTallFritz

Dear Santa…..

Dear Santa,

I realize I am you are really busy at this time of year but please don’t forget about the gifts I ordered from Amazon and Toys R Us  you, which will represent the BIG Santa gifts for our children.  Ironically, the BIG Santa gifts have yet to arrive be put on the sleigh.  I am absolutely sure that FED-EX  you have it under control but I just wanted to send out a friendly reminder.  Please forgive me for being cheap and not upgrading the shipping sending this last-minute reminder.  I would appreciate any help that you, or  your elves, could provide in lighting a fire under the shipping process  getting those gifts on the sleigh.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas too ALL of you working in shipping/receiving/delivery at the North Pole!

Many Blessings                                                                                                                Momma Mrs. Santa – TooTallFritz

It’s a GOOD Day!

I am 60+ hours post cortisone injection for the plantar fasciitis and I am feeling GOOD.  Like so unbelieveably good that if I weren’t so flippin’ tall, I’d buy a pair of these….and make Mick take me dancing.

Too much fun!

But alas, I am trying to reign in my excitement and not do something stupid like re-run the Chicago Marathon route to try for a better time.  I did have one person tell me that they had the shot and it only last for 2 weeks before the pain came back.  I don’t even want to entertain similar thought processes as I happily sit here but possibly that would be why the doc had planned on a series of cortisone shots to knock it out for good.   Crossing my fingers!

While I am feeling good, if you have a few stretches you would like to share to help me combat the return of the Plantar Fasciitis, I’d be happy to entertain all reasonable exercises.  I have been balancing on one foot, while holding the other up….to stengthen the foot/ankle in general, plus doing calf/achilles stretches.  I would love to add maybe 2 more stretches.  Help me out with suggestions but remember, time is NOT my friend so don’t get crazy I need to be quick and efficient with any stretching routine.

Drugs Please…Plantar Fasciitis – Part III

Last night was the recheck with the foot surgeon to determine the progress after a month in the orthotics.  I am making progress but it is much slower than the doc would like so he decided a cortisone injection was in order.  After the painful poking to determine the largest problem area, and the point of insertion, the needle went in……

OUCH……Doc kept saying, “Remember, it’s not as bad as childbirth, right?”   Well, HELL no, but I had 9+ months to prepare for childbirth and a mere 9 seconds to prepare for this injection asshole.  Plus my body was helping to push/expel the a baby out, there was no wiggling said baby around, we didn’t push/pull baby in and out and/or reposition it.  So overall, baby just came OUT whether I was ready or not.  The needle, however, had a real fight going into uncharted territory, plus it needed to be in multiple places at once and well, that’s just not how things work.  It hurt.   See the pink dot for the point of insertion.

Doc injected cortisone up toward the arch and down toward the heel.  Those were the areas most swollen and tender.  The idea behind the cortisone shot was NOT to mask the pain per say but to pull out the swelling.  We have been treating this since early September because that’s when it got so bad that I couldn’t run with icing, oral anti-inflammatory meds, taping/padding and eventually orthotics.  Yesterday marked five weeks of orthotic use and apparently we should have seen more progress.

September “Problems”

  • Left and Right Heel Pain – right heel far worse than left
  • Swelling of right foot, heel, Achilles Tendon, calf muscle
  • Left knee pain
  • Pain in both hips
  • Major cramping of right calf muscle after running a couple of miles
  • Left and right foot pain after running a couple of miles
  • Debilitating pain in feet and right calf to the point I would need to stop, stretch and walk during training runs
  • Racing was NOT good, lots of pain and swelling due to attempt at increased pace

5  Weeks Post Orthotics “Problems”

  • Right Heel Pain
  • Slight swelling in right heel and arch of foot
  • Fall off pace toward 8-10 mile mark of running
  • Right foot pain after 6-8 miles of running
  • Major right foot/heel pain after runs which require several days of rest to return to manageable pain level

Looking at these lists, I see that I have made a lot of improvement over the last couple of months.  Hopefully, after the pain from this cortisone injection dissipates, then the swelling will be reduced and maybe, just maybe, it will take some of the right heel pain with it.  Today is bad.  It hurts like a mother to walk and to sit and to stand.

The post-baby era, after having Mr. Michael has been rough.  2010 was the year of the come back, fighting the baby weight, and trying to regain fitness.  2011 was a year plagued with injuries starting in February/March with hip issues and then Plantar issues by summer.  I’m sure they are all related as the body is a complex organism but I would really like 2012 to be a pain-free year.  I can’t complain about 2011 because I have been fortunate to run some fast times for me while simultaneously being plagued with injuries.  That being said, I am careful about my miles.  Since I have been hurting this year, I take a few days off after training runs, or even a full week off in order to get as pain-free as possible race ready.  I certainly haven’t been at optimal fitness this year due to my sporadic mileage but I have made it thru the year with some decent times……22:19 – 5K, 40:31 – 8K, 1:16:40 – 15K, 1:53:20 Half Marathon….and I’ll just say I finished the 2011 Chicago Marathon with or without tears.  So I do look forward to racing pain-free in 2012.  I’m very willing to put in the miles and make it happen but I would like my body to be in a better spot.  If the next two cortisone shots don’t eliminate the swelling and right heel pain, then there will be time off in my near future.  I have a very big wish list for 2012 and want to do everything to the best of my ability PAIN-FREE.

Happy PAIN-FREE Running,                                                                                          Amanda – TooTallFritz

Tacky Christmas Has Arrived

We had a busy weekend as a family and it was all about Christmas 2011.  After my very peaceful and ME centered Saturday morning, reality hit it was family time as we headed downtown to Chicago’s Christkindl Market.

This  has become a sort of tradition for our family even though hubby HATES the cold.  So for a month preceding the designated date, the kiddos are bouncing off the walls and hubby is bitching up a storm grumbling.  Michael has been begging to go to Santa’s House since July when we started singing our first Christmas carols.  Trust me when I say that Christmas is a big deal at our house.  I have always loved this holiday the most and it seems that the kids love the music and holiday lights just as much as I.  Hubby is a good sport about the season, and even seems to reluctantly enjoy it even though it is always usually cold.  Here we are enjoying the Glühwein, a hot spiced wine…….love me some good German Festivities even with Mr. Grumpy. While the kiddos were enjoying the warming tent, carmel corn and some cinnamon & sugar candied almonds. But everyone one knows we really came to see the best Santa ever!  I really enjoy the Santa at Daley Plaza.  It’s the same one each year and they always take your photo for free.  Nice touch.  Each year Santa’s House gets larger and this year, we even had a short period where we were able to wait indoors and shed the winter clothing for a nice photo.  I, however, didn’t shed my clothing cuz I didn’t realize I was going to sit on Santa’s lap be in the photo.

We also looked at the Macy holiday window displays, went up to the Walnut Room to look at the Great Christmas Tree and then we headed home.  It was a short day due to Mr. Grumpy the kiddos not feeling great and the large crowd sizes.  Here is a photo of the tree in the Walnut Room at Macy’s….I stole this from Maggie – Run for Pi(e), we tried to go up to take a photo but that didn’t work out quite as we planned.

Today……Tacky Christmas OFFICIALLY arrived.  We usually wait a little longer to haul out the shit Christmas decorations since I we like a real tree.  If we get the tree too early then it dies because Aby forgets to water it before Christmas & New Years.  I must say that I used to pride myself on elegant and sophisticated Christmas decor but that has all gone to shit  out the window with the addition of a husband little ones to the family.  We now have lots of “extra” decorations for the children, and it also seems that our house has become the dumping ground we have inherited every handmade, crocheted item from our grandparents.  Since I am apparently not as sensitive as some, it is easy for me to throw out the crap pick and choose the items that fit into our holiday theme and donate the pieces that other’s might enjoy more for their homes.  However, not everyone in this household is a cold-hearted bitch like me and we now have A LOT of randoms.  So please, meet Tacky Christmas 2011……Really happy with the tree this year.  We purchased it locally, about 5 minutes from our home.  We didn’t cut it down, just went to a lot and picked it out with the kiddos.  Easy and still fun cuz they got to pick.  Ornaments include remnants I’ve had from days gone by, Mick & I’s childhood ornaments, ornaments given to our children, and a hodgepodge of life’s blessings.

Random overflow hits the playroom.

Plastic holiday table-cloth with window decor to match.

Tree of homeless/misfit ornaments.

Crocheted items from Grandma’s of Long Ago.

Mini Christmas Tree X2….there is another one floating around the house somewhere!

We have had a fun weekend and really enjoyed putting up Tacky Christmas 2011.  It’s all in good fun and the kiddos LOVE it.  I try not to move too many ornaments around when they go to bed  be OCD about the way everything looks cuz it really is about the kiddos at this point in our lives.  And if Mick wants to hang a crotched Christmas Card Basket from Grandma Long Ago, that’s okay too.  Memories are a wonderful thing.  However, the biggest thing for me is to constantly remind the kiddos that “Jesus is the REASON for the Season”.  I normally always take them to church on Christmas Eve; however, the service is late this year at 9pm.  Sigh….we will never make that…..too late for Mr. Michael.

I hope all of you have a very joyous holiday season!

Peace on Earth….Good Will To Men……..                                                                       Amanda – TooTallFritz

My Feet Hurt………Plantar Fasciitis – Part II

At this point in my life, I don’t get to watch many movies.   Since we have a screaming busy toddler running the house, it’s difficult to do anything that involves sitting and quiet.  However, I frequently find myself going back to an “old” movie, Forrest Gump (1994) for quotes that fit quite nicely into my life.  The quote that has been the forefront of my reality for longer than I’d like to admit is…… “My Feet Hurt”.  I can clearly see the scene with Forest sitting on the bench, waiting for the bus, and talking to the nurse telling her that “those must be comfortable shoes”…..and her quite simple reply being “my feet hurt”.  Simple.  True.  Powerful. Forrest Gump Quotes

Forrest Gump: Those must be comfortable shoes, I bet you could walk all day in shoes like those and not feel a thing.
Nurse at Park Bench: My feet hurt.
Forrest Gump: My momma always said you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes, where they go, where they’ve been. I’ve worn lots of shoes, I bet if I think about it real hard I can remember my first pair of shoes.

If you have looked at my shoes over the last 6 months, you might think that I only own one pair.   Running shoes.  I have been switching my trainers with an identical pair of retired running shoes and I wear them from the time I get up until bed.  I have been fighting Plantar Fasciitis for quite some time and  previously posted on it HERE.  The fight has been tough because I don’t want to stop running lose fitness.  I have cut back on my mileage by quite a bit, running only about 20 miles a week since crawling to the finish of the Chicago Marathon in October.  I have even had further complications with Mr. Michael life and therefore had to cut back to a mere two or three runs a week.  I can’t seem to get him to sleep without his feet propped up on my throat or his head on my heart my presence.  Since I am now limited to such a few number of runs, I have been trying to keep each of those around the 10 mile mark so that I can at least hit 20 miles per week.  This new strategy has really inflamed the Plantar Fasciitis which had been starting to settle down a bit after the lab created these orthotics for me:

I received them the first week of November and have been wearing them daily.  I am hoping the lab billed the insurance 2x or these babies are $600 each according the EOB from BCBS.   I haven’t paid a dime to the foot surgeon yet so that $$ reality is still looming.  I think he is waiting for me to jump up and down and say I feel great in order to send the shocker bill.  Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.  The left foot is good!  I really don’t have any further complaints there; however, I feel like I have an ICE PICK running thru my right heel and well, that would be a MAJOR complaint.  I’m limping, half walking on my toes, half floating……..I know you are trying to envision all of this but it’s really not as romantic as it sounds.  Quite awkward really.  And the hubby foot surgeon can’t really relate to running, or why I want to run and run long for basically no reason since I’m not currently training for anything.  Back to Forest Gump as my words would never be as eloquent……

[reporters ask Forrest his reasons for running all this time]
Forrest Gump: [voice over] They just couldn’t believe that somebody would do all that running for no reason.
Reporter: Why are you doing this?
Forrest Gump: I just felt like running.
Forrest Gump Quotes

And that’s exactly it.  I just FEEL like running………maybe because it is quiet, maybe because it allows me to feel at peace for a short time, maybe because it makes me feel like I am doing something good for myself, maybe because I can do it alone without any interruptions since I don’t even get to sleep or go to the bathroom shower alone. I don’t want to stop running and I certainly don’t want to have to rebuild my fitness from a prolonged break.  I have dug my way back from non-fitness land enough times to know that it sucks hurts.  Please, can we just fix this soon so that I can wear some pretty non-running shoes, run pain-free, walk pain-free in the days after a run and just feel good again?  I try not to be frustrated ,or bitch complain, but on days like today when friends are ALREADY talking about the 2012 Chicago Marathon, it makes me wanna cry. I struggled running 12 miles on Saturday and have basically been crippled/limping since I finished that run.  I can’t even contemplate more than that right now.  I think I’ll go back and reread the Baby Steps post and hopefully remember to think about today and not get overwhelmed by what the future may or may not bring.

Next week is a recheck to evaluate the “progress” I have made with the orthotics.  I think I am going to request the cortisone shot and take a week, or so, off to try to get this under control.  It hurts…..and that is an understatement.

How do you handle injuries?  Do you bounce back fast of find yourself riding that injury train for a LONG time, like me.

Happy, PAIN-FREE running!                                                                                           Amanda – TooTallFritz

Starving Artists…..

I currently know a few people who have been blessed with various artistic talents which I would like to showcase.  This post is dedicated to those artists who have websites and “wares” for sale plus small/local/home based businesses.  I hope that you see something you like on one of their websites and possibly give one of these special and unique gifts to a loved one for Christmas!

Sasha at Metamorphisis Creations has an etsy  store, where she posts some of her overflow work but her specialty certainly is custom work and she has a lot of product that isn’t listed.  Here are a few pieces which I have purchased from her over the last year.

Click HERE for Sasha’s Etsy Store or email her at metamorphosis7@hotmail.com to have her make something custom for you!

Another very talented artist is Devonee at Designs by Devonee.  It would be hard to pin down a specialty for Devonee.  She paints which is hard of me to comprehend since I can’t draw a stick figure, and sews, and is just ultimately very creative and talented.  Here are a few of my favorite things from her.  A sock elephant:

But there are many more sock animal creations too……lots of monkeys!!

Here is a painted wine bottle.

Devonee also paints wine glasses, ornaments, fences, key cabinets, record art, etc.  You name it, she can paint it.  Please click HERE to check out her etsy store or email her at dnlabriola@gmail.com for some custom work of your own!  Need a mural for a bedroom wall?  Call Devonee!

Karen at KLB Photography is another amazing artist who uses various cameras for her creative works.  She takes amazing photos that look vibrant and beautiful.  I hope to eventually have some of her art on my walls.  A couple of my favorites:

Please check out Karen’s website HEREor email her at klbimages@gmail.com.

Heather is a Good Buy Diva and has a facebook page where you can purchase insanely good deals on designer brand items. She was smart creative enough to realize that all of us don’t have the time or energy to shop for bargains although we still want to look hot good for a low price.  So go check out Good Buy Diva and save some $$ on cool stuff OR talk to Heather at goodbuydiva@live.com and she can find a good deal on what YOU want!  I like these!

Elizabeth is a stylist for a very hot product right now…..Stella & Dot.  This is a somewhat new and hot fashion jewelry company.  She has a “real” job and does this on the side so call or email her at elizabethberger08@gmail.com to set up a Trunk Show or please feel free to click HERE to do some shopping on her website.  I think you already know that one of my favorite things is currently the Stella & Dot Snake Orb necklace:

And the item on my “wish list” is the Renegade Necklace:

Katia is a Willow House consultant and has lots of great products for your home as well as a new jewelry line!  Katia’s favorite product is the Hyacinth Mixing Bowls which are very versatile and stylish:

I personally like to cook and cook BIG cuz I am a pig love to eat.  So one of my favorite item is the large Southern Sipper Serving Bowl which is see thru so my beautiful creations can be visually appreciated:

Click HERE to shop Katia’s Willow House store or email her at eckosha@aol.com to set up your own home show or talk to her about the products/business opportunity!

My friend Nicki is a Shaklee consultant and although that conflicts with my AdvoCare roots there are some great products which I love from Shaklee.  My favorite products are the Get Clean Germ Off Wipes and the Get Clean Basic H(2)R Organic Cleaning Concentrate:

Click HERE to go shopping with Nicki!  Or email her at ms-nicki@sbcglobal.net for some personal assistance with products or how to make some extra cash as a Shaklee rep!

And last but not least, I can’t spotlight home businesses without including AdvoCare.  As many of you know, I have been an AdvoCare distributor for years and I really love the products.  They work for me and I love that there is a great amount of R&D that goes into each and every product so that they are the best by the time they reach consumers.  I have already listed my favorite products under the AdvoCare page on the TooTall blog but a new product that I love is the AdvoCare Oasis.   This product helps to combat stress and I might have a “little” of that.  The product tastes good and comes in small packets that you can throw in your bag or purse…..control stress while traveling.  I also always start the new year with an Herbal Cleanse to refresh my body and start everything anew.  I use the Herbal  Cleanse minimum of 2x a year, usually January & July.

So if you are interested in health & wellness products, energy, weight loss, sports performance or skin care, please visit my microsite HERE or feel free to contact me at amanda@tootallfritz.com .  If you don’t want to talk to me, then feel free to call on my friend Lisa HERE.

I hope this gives you some new and fresh ideas for Christmas!  I know how hard it is to shop for the loved ones so hopefully one of my friends can help find something to suit your needs!

Cars, Cars, and MORE Cars…..

What do you get at the Infiniti Service Department for $700?  Not much, about a 1/4 of a break job (front/resurface only), an oil change and a new REALLY important belt  that apparently makes the car go and would be a problem if it actually broke half way into Indiana with a load of kiddos in the car.  Oh, and a car wash plus interior cleaning……so maybe it was worth it?

I won’t even bother pretending to be green or economical when it comes to cars.  I’m a car snob enthusiast and won’t drive one that won’t get up and move or at least look good trying.  I came by it honest since Mom and Dad always had something cool in the “drive”.  Their current toys are FOR SALE.   1984 Hurst Oldsmobile 442:

1976 Chevy Corvette:

When I got out of college, I didn’t go look for a job, I bought this:

Lots of fun in that red camaro, probably too much fun.  So glad I bought it and beat the shit out of it.  Some dude that my FIL (father-in-law) knows is still driving this car around in CA somewhere.  Wish I were in CA driving this car.

After college, I wasn’t looking for a hubby, just some dude who would wrench on my car so I didn’t get my hands dirty.  Enter dude Mick:

So last night I assigned put him on a mission to find photos of “some” of our old cars.  We have been married since August 1999 and he estimated 25 cars that we have owned since then.  That is an average of purchasing 2.5 cars a year.  Not green.  Not economical.  Not smart.  Some were for fun:

That silver vette didn’t last long.  I stole it from some old people for cheap, then it had electical issues and I realized that although it sounded good and was fun, it sat really low, was uncomforable to drive and it was hard to see anything in traffic.  And since I was so low and visibility was poor, it never really got driven to it’s full potential.

Lots of history for the Carey men with this black vette.  Mick had it as a teen, then my FIL had it, then it was sold, then the FIL bought it back many years later, then he gave it back to Mick and it’s currently for sale for too much $$ out in cyberland.  The car looks awesome in the photo because some magazine was shooting it.  Really, it was more “normal” looking on a day to day basis.  I loved driving this car short distances when I could pry it away from hubby cuz it had “some” specialty parts for racing and really just scared the shit out of people when you started it up.  Plus, being a chick, dudes really were shocked when I got out of it.  And I love a good shock factor.

This Seabring (stock photo cuz we didn’t keep it long) was a POS crappy car, poor sound, crappy ride, the only positive was when the top was down and then EVERYONE bitched hated riding in it cuz of the wind tunnel.  Even the dog hated the convertible, so out the door it went cuz it wasn’t worth hearing them bitch the overall general crappiness.

Some for racing/hobby/keeping the hubby happy:

The white camaro is the current “project” car…..I think…… he can’t make up his mind.  He might want an old 70’s vette to build or he might keep this…..makes my head spin, and I really dislike the 3rd Gen body style for the camaro, I’m rooting for him to build a vette.

Some shared with Father Carey:

Some which hit car magazines and made hubby infamous with other gearheads car dudes:

Some zippy daily drivers….supercharged Grand Prix GTP……. “family car”:

I really liked this car.  It came to me as I was giving up the red camaro after Aby was born  and hauling her in and out of that car, with only 2 doors, no interior room, and lots of driving a stick shift with a screaming baby in the car.  This car was a compromise, family car space plus engine power for momma.  It had a nice rumble too, plus a great Bose sound system to drown out screaming babies, moon roof, heating seats.  LOVE.  Pontiac really knew how to do it right.

Grand Prix GXP (300+ HP V-8)….”family car”:

I loved the silver GTP above so much that hubby found this one for me.  This was a newer & improved model and was a really awesome car.  First, it was black, need I say more?  Second, although this model didn’t have a supercharger, which I was slightly leary about, it had lots of power and an even better rumble than the GTP.  LOVED this car and it was a REAL struggle to get rid of it and move into a new market once Pontiac stopped production.  I still miss this car and if they made it again, I would go back.  Lots of options, looked good, had nice interior space and it really slid through downtown traffic, plus was awesome on the tollways and interstates heading to/from my parents.  Did I mention that I really LOVED this car?

Some utilitarian for towing, hauling the family plus the kitchen sink:

Some just cuz the price was right:

1962 Oldsmobile Cutlass F85 – currently FOR SALE please come get it out of our barn!

Some which were worth less than my road/TRI bikes:

Up until just recently, each and every vehicle we purchased was american made.  But things change.  And the lines have been muddled.  It appears that nobody knows what it means to be “American Made” anymore.  The “American” cars are now made overseas and the foreign cars are made and assembled in the US.  Sigh…..hard to know what is what anymore.  So for the first time, we have a round of “foreigners” in our garage.  .

These foreigners don’t rumble, they purr.  They are just sleek, smooth and I guess probably designed for a more “mature” consumer.  We have been promised that they will  last “forever” and I can drive them into the ground if we maintain them.  We’ll  see, I put 30K+ miles on the Infiniti this year……and the goal is to keep it til Aby gets her license in 6 more years.  Not sure if this is a blessing or a punishment.  Hubby’s Nissan Maxima:

“Stock” Photo of Infiniti G35X cuz it’s too hard to go out to the garage to snap a photo.

I like the Infiniti.  It gets up and moves and is very sleek, has good sound, moon roof, heated seats, and gps/computer.  Nice to drive.  However, it is somewhat uncomfortable to ride passenger, has little interior space in the back seat Aby hates it, little trunk room and is a gas hog.  Hubby wanted me to get the M series for space reasons but it just didn’t move as well.  I drove a lot of cars to decide on the Infiniti and I do like, it just not sure I will stay with the Infiniti line after this car gets passed on to Miss Aby.

This is a decent compilation of our vehicles past and present.   Cars are a bit of a passion for us.  Mick likes the fast/hobby/race cars but will settle for a normal or even shitty daily driver.  Me, I like a fast daily driver that can accomodate the family to some degree.  I am over the sports car thing, don’t like how low they are to the ground, or the poor visibility but you won’t catch me in a minivan or SUV anytime soon either.   I know, not green, not practical, not smart but it’s part of who we are as imperfect people.

What do you drive?  Is it smart and practical or excessive and possibly more than what you really need?

Happy Driving!                                                                                                                           Amanda – TooTallFritz
