SOL REPUBLIC DECK Speaker Winner!

Deck_heist

Great responses to the giveaway for the SOL REPUBLIC DECK Speaker!  Don’t worry, I took out Hubby’s comments and won’t let him win so if I’m divorced next week, it will certainly be because of this and NOT because I left him with the kids for 5 day to go off and run the Dopey Challenge

The random number generator selected #58.

# 58 is Michelle Krause – Michelle, please send your mailing address to amanda@tootallfritz.com and I’ll get your info to the rep so that you can get your new DECK Wireless Speaker ASAP.

As for hubby the rest of you, Best Buy is the #1 retailer for the DECK Wireless Speaker.   Shop online HERE or head to a local retailer and pick one up.   These things are so much fun and they sound great too!  Very portable, which I appreciate when I’m folding laundry in my bedroom or soaking in the tub!

SOL REPUBLIC DECK Wireless Speaker Review & Giveaway

The coolest thing arrived on my doorstep on Christmas Eve.  I was able to welcome the SOL REPUBLIC DECK Wireless Speaker into my home!

Deck_package2  Deck_package

I’ve been looking at wireless speaker options for well over a year but couldn’t decide what I wanted.  I’m NOT a techy person.  I don’t even like to change the batteries in my Knuckle Lights, and that’s the truth.  Hubby does all the computer, tv, music stuff.   Aby handles it when he isn’t home.  I’d rather be running than trying to figure out where to plug in things to make them work.  So there you have it.  I’m not techy.  And I don’t want to be.

So when the DECK arrived I was nervous.  Hubby wasn’t home and I was excited and wanted to try it out immediately.  It needed to charge so that got me off the hook for a bit but it charged quickly and hubby arrived home in the interim.  Once it was charged, things were so simple that even I could handle it!  It hooks up to any Bluetooth ready device and will allow up to 5 different devices to hook up at once (if you want to share!).  I went into the Bluetooth settings on my iPhone and paired the DECK and the phone.  It recognized it immediately.  We then paired Aby’s phone and Hubby’s phone for kicks.  Then the fun really began.  When you are in multiple user mode and have more than one phone connected, anyone can control the music (unless you lock them out).  SOL REPUBLIC has coined the term “Heist Mode” for multiple users and anyone can “heist” the song selection by choosing a song from their Bluetooth ready device.  Each time a heist occurs, the speaker lights up in a different color to signify the user who has made the “heist”.  In the pic below I am heisting in green, Aby was red and hubby was blue.

Deck_heist

We eventually connected the iPad too and it was purple but we have yet to connect a 5th device.

The DECK is so much fun and we have really enjoyed playing with it and just having something so portable to move around the house.  I’m looking forward to using it in a party setting tomorrow night on New Year’s Eve!  Not everyone in our house has the same music taste so we are always fighting over the music selection.  Always.  And someone, usually multiple someone’s, lose the fight.  No losing the battle anymore, everyone gets to play their favorite songs!

Thru the DECK we have played, iTunes, CDs, mp3s, Pandora and YouTube.  All of these music options worked well and had great sound.  Kids prefer a YouTube video playing on the iPad with the music blasting on the DECK but I was pretty happy with all the options plus it would never have occurred to me to load a YouTube video to watch & listen to simultaneously.  Never.

If you want the technical info, please read the press release HERE or go to the Best Buy website HERE where the DECK Wireless Speaker retails for $199.  My non-techy self just knows 1)  that it’s easy to use and pair with multiple devices,  2) the Heist Mode is SUPER fun, 3)  there is an outdoor mode that I will love when spring/summer rolls around and we are outside ALL the time, 4)  I can easily carry it around with me from room to room, 5)  It comes in multiple color options, including bright colors in case your kids drop it in the grass or somewhere in the woods, 6) It will pick up phone calls too if  in “individual” mode and playing music from one’s phone, 7)  It comes with plugs and wires for devices which I may want to hook up that aren’t Bluetooth/wireless compatible like I’d ever do that, and lastly, I know that it SOUNDS GOOD.  I’m very picky about my sound.  I won’t even buy a car that has crappy speakers and I don’t want any poor speakers in (or out) of the house.  Music is important to me.  Love this thing!

Deck2

If you don’t believe my non-techy review, then I guess I’ll let you know that Hubby LOVES the DECK too.  He is obsessed with it and has even been using it when I’m not home.  This really is an amazing family gift!  We love it and if you are in the market for a wireless speaker, this is a good one.

Do you want to win a DECK Wireless Speaker, $199 retail?  Of course you do!   To be eligible to win, please comment below and tell me how you blast your music now.  Do you have a wireless speaker, if so which brand?  Do you use a stereo or maybe the TV?  What do you do when you are outside?  I certainly hope you haven’t been pulling a massive speaker out of the house like I have for the last 10 years, but if so, it’s okay cuz I can relate.  Smile   Tell me!  Giveaway starts NOW and I will draw one winner on Friday, January 3rd, 2014 at 9am via  a random number generator.  One entry per person.

I have also seen giveaways for the DECK Wireless Speaker on the SOL REPUBLIC Facebook page.  So if you want extra opportunities to win one of these babies, like them on Facebook HERE and follow them on Twitter HERE.

Good luck!

Injinji Socks Review & Giveaway ……

My feet are a “little” sensitive.  I’m SUPER picky about my socks.   And to be honest, no matter how picky I am, I still get blisters, lose toenails and have REALLY ugly feet.   I have more pairs of socks than any “normal” person should but really, WHO WANTS TO BE NORMAL?  I hand pick the most desirable pair of clean socks for each workout to protect my feet to the best of my ability.    If a pair stretches, or wears, or doesn’t fit perfect then it goes to the trash unless Aby claims them or recycling.   My sock collection ….. Yes, “collection” is the proper term ….. encompasses two full dresser drawers and “might” be sorted according to use, thickness, ankle height, trail and compression.  I don’t own socks for fashion purposes, each one is functional and an amazing performer or it loses it spot in the line-up.  Sounds dramatic?  Most definitely.  Serious business in my world.

image

Until recently my sock drawer was missing one specific type of sock, the “toe sock”.   I first heard about toe socks, specifically Injinji Toesocks from a fellow friend/runner/blogger, Maggie at MagMileRunner.   She has been wearing them forever, raves about them {read her review HERE}, won’t run in anything else.  I wasn’t interested.  Sounded weird.  Like super weird (sorry, Maggie!).  Yeah, not for me.   However, my young running princess, Miss Abygayl, jumped onto the Injinji toe sock train with both feet and has been using them exclusively for well over a year now.  See her Injinji’s with her pink shoes from a run this fall.

me & aby_shoes_injinji

Well, this year has been a particularly rough year for my feet.  My feet have blistered in every spot imaginable and I kept hearing Maggie’s voice in the back of my head, “you should try the Injinji’s”.  So I stole a pair of Aby’s for a test run on the treadmill and was pleasantly surprised.  Okay, I liked them a lot.  Really, a lot.  So I went shopping and bought a few pair.  Smile  All three of the ones pictured below (plus a blue pair), original weight no show socks.  Why did I pick those?  Because I haven’t bought Aby any in a while so I figured they had to be “originals”.

image

Wore those for a bit on all my long runs, then went shopping again for some taller, “trail” socks”.  Been wearing the midweight trail mini-crew socks for all my trail runs.  It’s been cold.  Snowy.  Icy.  But my feet stay warm even when they are wet.

Injinji_trail

I’ve been very happy with all of these so I decided to reach out and get you some socks too because these things are awesome and I know that most people will be hesitant to try something so different.  I want you to think outside the box.  These socks are warm and cozy and fit so perfectly.  If you are prone to blisters and lose toenails like me, then these WILL help you.  They will also help hold your toe protectors in the perfect spot so that they won’t slide off when they get cold and wet {or sweaty}.  Nothing worse than having a toe protector half way off your toe when you are trying to run a marathon.  Been there, done that, not so fun.  That, however, won’t be a problem for me anymore!

ToeProtectors_NEW feet w toe protectorsInjinji_road2

I also like that the Injinji’s come in a variety of thicknesses and lengths since I prefer different types of socks for different types of runs.  One sock does not fit all runs!   I train mostly in the original weight no shows (pictured in grey but I have a few other colors too).  I run trails and wintery/cold/snowy runs in the midweight mini-crews (pictured in green but I also have purple).  I will race 5Ks in 2014 in the lightweight no shows,  like the black and purple ones below.

Injinji_road   image  image

I am going to ask Santa to bring me a pair of the tall compression 2.0 socks because those are the only Injini socks which I have yet to try and I am anxious to add them to my compression sock drawer!!

image

Now let’s hook you up for the win!  One lucky winner will win TWO pair of Injinji socks:  one pair for the road, another for the trail!  WhoooHoooo!   If you would like to enter to win, please comment below and tell me if you have EVER tried toe socks and if so how you feel about them!  Second entry available if you go like Injinji on Facebook HERE (and then let me know in the comments below).

One winner will be drawn on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 9am via a random number generator.  Good luck!

Unique Gift Idea, Moji 360 Foot Massager Review

I’m always on the look out for cool gifts for people I love and have recently stumbled across or rather it was sent to my doorstep the Moji 360 Foot Massager.

 Moji Foot Msgr

I instantly loved the idea of this foot massager because as a runner AND a person with foot issues, it just SOUNDED amazing.  I’m long past putting a golf ball in the freezer to roll my foot and help the Plantar Fasciitis instead I just go see Dr. Alexis every week.  The golf ball gets stolen by my little angels.  Or a dog tries to grab it while I’m supposed to be “massaging” and rolling my foot.  Yeah, that just didn’t work for me.  I’ve also tried using “the stick” on my feet and well, that’s not ideal either.  The Moji 360 Foot Massager, however is working!  It is a COOL, fun item, it relaxes the foot, the dogs don’t try to steal it, and the kids aren’t tossing it around the house.  It’s been a big WIN for me!  I do, however, have to fight off the little ones who think it’s “cool” because they want to roll their feet too!   Michael says “it tickles”! Once I let them have a turn, I normally get to use it too. Normally.

Moji Foot Msgr_Michael  Moji Foot Msgr_me

The massager is manual.  No batteries, no plug.  It’s portable and can and has been tossed in my workout/travel bag.  It’s small and doesn’t take up a lot of space.  It’s easy to use, I just roll my feet across the balls.  It doesn’t slip like the golf ball because there is a slip pad on the bottom.  Plus there are two massage zones, one on each side.  Zone 1, on the left is for “relaxation” and has 7 small steel massage spheres for a more targeted massage.  They also don’t dig too deeply into your foot because the spheres are small.  You can adjust the intensity by how hard you push your foot on the massager.  Zone 2, is on the right, and has two larger massage spheres.  They are more intense and this zone is used for deep tissue massage.  This is normally the side that I use since I have a few foot “issues”.   Moji claims that the foot massager will help break up scar tissue for people who have foot issues, like Plantar Fasciitis.  Of course, I can’t {or won’t} comment on what it will or will not do but this is way more effective {in my world}, and targeted, than a golf ball massage.

Here are a few photos and some details from the catalog.

Cool product, particularly if you are a runner, are on your feet a lot, or if you have foot issues.  Good price point, retails at $39.99 so it’s an affordable gift for yourself or someone you love!

The Moji 360 Foot Massager is available online HERE and on Amazon.com, plus at many local specialty stores.  Look up local retailers HERE.

Tough Chik Fleece Sweatshirt Review & Giveaway

image

One of my favorite retailers, Tough Chik, has brought out a few new things for the holiday season.  If you live in a climate with seasonal changes, you may be struggling to adjust to the colder temps like myself.  I’ve been cold a lot.  I’ve been shivering a lot.  And I struggle finding warmer clothing items which are cute, warm and snuggly!  I’m very picky about sweaters and sweatshirts.  If I’m cold enough to put one on then I want it to look AND feel good.  The softer the better.  Enter the Tough Chik fleece, hooded sweatshirt.  Retail $40.

ToughChik_fleece

This fleece arrived in the mail this weekend and I had to pry it out of Aby’s hands haven’t taken it off since.  It’s a nice aqua color which is girly but not too over the top.  I like that.  The back has the phrase that Tough Chik coined, “THIS IS WHAT TOUGH LOOKS LIKE”, which is one of my favorite things about Tough Chik!!  The outside is normal sweatshirt material and the inside is a butter soft fleece.  I LOVE that!  I mean, I REALLY love that.  Nothing makes me feel better than slipping on something that is warm and snuggly.  Mr. Michael and I are big “snugglers” and we like to be warm.  Obviously we can’t sit and snuggle in the rocker 24/7, much to our dismay, so it’s nice to have a sweatshirt which makes me feel happy and warm!  Yes, it really is  possible to have clothing which makes you FEEL happy.  Smile

This fleece is unisex sizing, so runs big.  Normally for unisex sizing, I go down one size and end up with an item that is too big, so if you like a form fitted piece then I really recommend going down 2 sizes.  If you like a baggier fit so that you can layer underneath, then go down 1 size from what you would normally order in a ladies item.  For example, I’m a large in Nike clothing but would order a small in this for a “fitted” look or  a medium for a baggier look where I could layer up underneath.  Hope that helps.  I know fitting is hard for us ladies and I want you to look and feel good about your clothes!!!

image

I really love this piece and if I didn’t already I own it, I’d beg mom to buy it for me add it to my Christmas list.  In fact, I loved it so much that I’ve already ordered 2 more for Christmas gifts {please don’t tell Aby!}.

Tough Chik has generously agreed to give one of you this amazing fleece for FREE!  If you would like to win a special Christmas present directly from the Original Tough Chik herself, please comment below and tell us if you own an item of clothing that makes you FEEL happy {and I really hope that you do!}   You will be eligible for a second entry into the giveaway if you go “like” the Tough Chik Facebook page HERE.  And you can get a third entry if you share this giveaway via any social media outlet of your choosing.  Just let me know what you did in the comments section below so that I can get you registered with the appropriate number of entries!  Three total entries possible per person.  Giveaway starts NOW and runs til Monday, December 9th at 9am.  Winner will be selected via a random number generator and announced on Monday.  GOOD LUCK!!

If you can’t wait to win, feel free to go shopping NOW.  Tough Chik is offering free shipping until tonight (Wednesday, December 4th) at midnight with the code:  TOUGHCHIKTUESDAY.

Balega Sock Giveaway x6

I haven’t done a lot of giveaways this year.  Because I’m picky.  Because I won’t be giving away anything that I don’t LOVE .  Because I’m a creature of habit.  Because I’m not usually always willing to try something new even if it’s free.  Sooooo, when an incognito Balega rep found me at an expo this summer and so nonchalantly asked, “what kind of socks do you wear?”, I suspiciously politely smiled and said, “Why do you ask?”

image

Years ago, I tried Balega but we did not become fast friends.  I either purchased the wrong size or maybe they just didn’t fit my foot properly.  Not sure which.  However, those socks quickly went from too big to gigantic as they stretched out over a period of time.  They did not get donated to a good cause but eventually “recycled”.  That was the year that Michael was born, so 2009.  I haven’t owned a pair of Balega’s since.

After the Balega rep identified herself, she assured me that the Balega’s NOW boasted to be the best running socks in the industry.  She suggested I try a pair.  I stared at her.  Unsure.  So long story short, she sent me a two pair in the mail.

balega

One padded, the PINK Hidden Contours and then an Ultra Light blue/grey pair.  I’m not going to lie the first thing that caught my attention was that pretty pink color, then I  immediately noticed the socks were padded.  I LOVE padded socks.

imageI’m on the run a lot both in “real life” and in my trainers and I will ALWAYS grab a pair of cushioned socks first unless I need compression.  So I tried the hidden contours the same day they arrived on a fast and furious treadmill run.  LOVED them.  In fact, I loved them so much that I didn’t throw them in the wash even though they were a tad bit schweaty.  🙂  But instead, I recycled them for a second run.

The ultra lights are really nice too but very thin material that is described as “second skin”.  Perfect fit.  Just like second skin.  They don’t move.  As a runner, I have a “few” pair of socks.  I like different socks for different types of runs.  Is that strange?  Absolutely not!  I’m totally normal.  My preference for speed workouts and speedy races fall to light shoes and lightweight socks.  These ultra lights found a special spot in my heart fast as I normally pound out one speed workout every week and I found myself constantly grabbing for these when I saw them in the drawer.   That’s a win in my world!

I’m not going to get into all the technology behind these socks cuz who really cares you can read about it on their website but I will tell you that I not only like the socks but would buy more.  So there you have it. I’d spend my hard earned $$ on these babies and then hide them in my drawer so that Aby doesn’t steal them even planned to buy the October Breast Cancer Awareness limited edition Balegas at the Chicago Marathon expo but couldn’t find any.

You may wonder why I’ve had these socks since summer and not posted about them?  Well, truth be told, I was waiting to see how they were going to “wear”.  My 2009 Balegas didn’t  make it long before they stretched out to the point where I wouldn’t wear them.  So I’ve been wearing, washing, wearing, washing and then wearing and washing these Balegas a lot.  And they are still the same as when they arrived.  Same level of cushion.  Same shape.  Same size.  Same socks …… that have just been washed 20 or so times now.  🙂  Grabbed them out of my drawer just to show you.  They look and feel perfect.  Thanks, Balega!!

balega_hidden contour   image

Balega has very generously agreed to give away 6 pairs of socks!!  If you would like to win a pair, please comment below and tell us which running socks are your absolute favorite.  And when I mean favorite, I’m saying if you could only have one pair to run in for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, which ones would you keep?  You can grab a second entry by heading over to the Balega Facebook page HERE and giving them a “like”.  And lastly, you can garner a third entry if you actually leave a message on their wall and tell them, “I want to win a pair of Balega socks from the TooTallFritz.com giveaway!”.  Or something like that.  🙂  Just make sure that you tell me {in the comments section below} which of the above you did so that I give you the proper amount of entries!

Six winners will be chosen by a random number generator on WED, November 20th at 9am.  Good luck!  Go enter the giveaway NOW!

Whooha Gear GIVEAWAY!

I had a crappy weekend.  First off, there was the bad race at Great Illini where the temps soared over 100 degrees and my bike tires and shoes stuck in the tar.  Apparently nobody received the memo that heat/humidity is my kryptonite.  Second, I was struck with a full blown allergy attack that left my face swollen and haggard looking.  SO, let’s get things back on the happy track and do a giveaway!!!  WhooooHoooooo!!!  Or should I say, WhoooooooHaaaaaaa!

Whooha Gear has been one of my favorite retailers over the last couple of years.  I have multiple pieces from them ranging from butter soft tees to a loose fitting hoodie that I wear everywhere. Good stuff (you can see my last post on Whooha Gear HERE).   Whooha is a small women owned company offering products for other women athletes with the intent to help inspire other women.  That’s a winning philosophy in my book!

WHOOHA = Women Having Optimistic Objectives & Healthy Attitudes

I have two items from the new 2013 line and I have several more things on my “wish list”.  I picked up the “Regret Nothing” tee (Play Hard, Take Chances, Keep Smilin) at the Zooma Chicago expo.  I haven’t seen this orange one online yet but they have it and if you want to call them, I bet they will get you one!!

Whooha_regret nothing

Then last week, I received this baby in the mail right before heading out to the disastrous Great Illini 70.3.  The Swim, Bike, Run Heartbeat tee:

Whooha_swim bike run

I’ve never been much of a t-shirt person but these don’t feel like traditional tees.  They are soft, form fitting but not super tight and they move with me.  I’m not only comfortable in them but love the message and designs.  I have basically been wearing them around the clock which is why I don’t have a photo of me in the orange tee cuz it’s always headed to the wash when I’m not working or exercising.

Do you want to win a Whooha shirt or hoodie?  Whooha has generously agreed to give one winner their pick from the website.  Yes, anything.  You pick what you like and what fits your style!   Go look around HERE and leave me a comment below telling me what you will pick if you win.  If you would like a second entry into the giveaway, go like the Whooha Facebook page and leave a comment below telling me you did so and please provide your FB name for verification purposes.

One winner will be drawn on Friday, September 6th at 9am.  GOOD LUCK!

And if you can’t wait to win, then please shop HERE  using the discount code:  INSPIRE for 10% off your order.

Don’t forget to “Play Hard, Take Chances & Keep Smilin”!

SLS3 Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

image

If you know me, or have been reading for awhile, you already know that I love, Love, LOVE compression.  I wear compression multiple times a week for workouts, recovery and {gasp} fashion.   I’ve said it before, I think compression is a game changer.  It helps “normal” people perform better in endurance activities because we are able to recover faster.  Game changer.  For people like me who don’t have a full time masseuse & chiropractor & trainer on hand to take care of my everyday aches and pains this is important.  It’s a game changer for me personally. So when SLS TRI contacted me about possibly doing a review on their compression socks, it made me think.  Did I want to or not?  I’m pretty brand loyal and 99% of my compression socks are from one company.  I like that company,  plus they have helped and supported me in the past.  What to do?  I clicked on the SLS TRI website to browse around before I responded.  I was shocked to see that they had a full line of not only compression socks but also compression TRI wear.   I’ve been wanting to try a pair of compression TRI shorts for a long time so I figured I would start with the socks and venture out from there.

SLS TRI sent me these awesome compression socks:

SLS3_compression socks_pink   SLS3_compression socks_pink_back

If we go on looks alone, apparently we have a BIG winner!  These are the cutest compression socks ever!  They even have decorative butterflies!

image

But we can’t go on looks alone because that doesn’t help us us physically feel better. I first wore them to CrossFit.  I wear compression socks (and compression shorts) to CrossFit almost every time I go, which is 2x a week.  Why?  Because CrossFit has a way of just kicking my ass stressing my muscles.  The only time I didn’t wear compression, I showed up to a 1/2 Murph WOD and was sore for a week.  OUCH.  Lesson learned. The compression socks worked great for Crossfit.  On first wear, I was particularly happy that they were long enough to cover my entire calf, up to my knee.  This is an issue with some brands.  I ordered from the sizing chart specifications below and was very happy with the fit which put me in a size M/L.

image

They were very breathable and I didn’t get overheated, even though I sweat like a pig the “box” can get a little steamy at times.  The socks compressed well without being overly tight and they didn’t slip, slide or fall down.  Win!  Oh, and they looked cute and I got multiple compliments. Since they passed the CrossFit test, next up was the run test.  I must admit that I opted out of wearing them on the day that it was 98 degrees.  Although, I am definitely getting used to wearing compression knee socks on warm days, I’m not crazy that brave.  I actually waited for the run test until last week when the temps dropped back into the 70s and it was a real joy to wear them.  When I try something different, I don’t want to know that I’m wearing anything new.  If I can “feel” something different then that “something” usually doesn’t reappear in my lineup.  I was very happy at the end of my 4 miler, in reasonably warm conditions, when I realized that I hadn’t noticed them at all during the run.  Love that!  I plan to wear them again this weekend on my 15 miler. I have since worn these socks to work for recovery after the Ironman 70.3 Racine race last week.  I’ve also purchased the other two colors (purple and azure blue) and started wearing those too (the blue ones to CrossFit this morn!).   Yep, I like them a lot!

image

Want to try them?  I have a pair for you too!  I have one pair of the pink butterfly compression socks, size S/M for you to win!!!  This is a $54.90 value!  In order to be entered into the drawing, please go to Facebook and like the SLS TRI Facebook page.  I’ll give you a second entry to the drawing if you also take a minute to write a note on their wall telling them that you want to win a FREE pair of compression socks from the TooTallFritz  giveaway!  Don’t forget to comment below, telling me that you “liked” them on FB and if you wrote on their wall. Winner will be chosen via a random number generator on Tuesday, August 6th at 9am.  Good luck! If you are too excited to wait for the giveaway, I certainly understand.  You can shop HERE using the 15% off discount code:  TRI15 for anything in the SLS TRI store.   I personally am going to try the Compression TRI Race Shorts next!!

Running in the Heat ….

I think summer has finally arrived.  The heat and humidity have been circling the CHI like a shark considering the most strategic plan of attack.  It’s swooped in a couple of times only to be abruptly scared off; however, it’s not leaving this time.  So how are we going to handle running in the heat?   I’m going to cry cut my run short and head for my car!  Okay, I admit that I did do that last night but that’s not my normal method of heat management.  Here is a fast and friendly list that anyone can use to try to keep cool while running cuz the bottom line is that if you run, you will be running in the heat sooner rather than later.

Running in the Heat Cartoon

  • Hydrate – I know this is a no brainer but it’s of utmost importance.  You need to be consuming good fluids which hydrate, all day, every day.  Not beer.  Not wine.  Water.  Remember that alcohol dehydrates you, for days if you go on a binder like I did last weekend and will cost you after the fact.  One day/night of drinking will take many more days to replenish what was lost.   The alcohol is a diuretic, gets into your muscles and flushes out all the good stuff that you’ve worked so hard to put into your body.  It causes you to lose excess water (and vitamins & minerals), slows the pumping of your blood which decreases the amount of oxygen to your already depleted muscles and inhibits your body from pumping enough blood to get to your skin which is one of your natural, self-cooling methods. Scientific, huh?  I know, go get the real info HERE, then go fill up your water bottle.
  • Dress appropriately – Once again, sounds easy, right?  Maybe, maybe not!  When Chicago heats up, it’s no joke.  Think people in the ghetto city busting open fire hydrants cuz it’s so hot they could die.  Yep, it’s THAT hot.  So don’t take it lightly, dress in lightweight, cooling, moisture wicking tops with as little material touching you as possible.  One of my favorite “hot weather” tops is the Saucony Ignite Singlet ($30) and the Saucony Hydralite Tank ($25) which is on Last Chance Clearance for $12 HERE if you are an XS.  It’s so light, you can barely feel it.  I have 4 of ignite singlets, see an older model below (with Susan D) in pink.  On the “bottom”, my favorite hot weather skirt is Race Belt Skirt ($45) from SkirtSports.  The black & pink Race Belt Skirts come in an airy light material that has a lot of tiny pinholes.  Super for cooling & they dry FAST when they get wet!  Try a skirt this summer!!

Me&Susan_Jelly Bean_4-4-12    image

  • Hat, Visor & Sunglasses – Although, I’m not necessarily a hat person, it will help keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes.  If you can double up with a visor & sunglasses, even better!  If you can get your hands one of the 180s Cooling Visors ($25), much, MUCH better!  I was totally kicking myself that I didn’t have it last night when I had to bail on my run cuz I thought I would pass out.  The 180s cooling visor is my go to visor when it’s hot.  And in case you were wondering on sunglasses, I’m still rocking the Ryder Shot Photochromic’s that I reviewed last year HERE which are the only glasses I’ve worn on the run more than once or twice.  I really like them!  They are lightweight and don’t move even when I have sweat water pouring down my face.

  • Carry or drop water for your runs.  If  you don’t like to carry your own water, consider dropping some along your run route or circling a path with a fountain.  I need a lot of water when it’s warm.  I drink, then dump.  If I’m wearing a hat/visor then I’ll get that wet  too!  This keeps my head cool(er) and the wetness provides a barrier from the heat.   The easiest way for me to carry water is via a hydration belt.  I’m not good with handhelds because I don’t like to hold onto anything.  My favorite hydration belt is below, it even went to Ragnar FL Keys with me.  The Road Runner Sports R-Gear Double Duty 2 Bottle Belt ($26.99) is light, doesn’t move, fits well, has Fuel Bottle brand “bottles” but is an exclusive Road Runner Sports design.  I particularly like the reflective pouch at the front and the plastic casings for the bottles to keep them from falling out, plus I can still wear it with my FlipBelt.  Win, Win!image
  • Sunscreen – The one thing that most people forget.  It will not only provide protection from the sun but also offer an immediate cooling effect upon application.  I also personally think that if you can keep your skin from heating up and burning, your internal cooling systems have an easier go and can work at keeping you cool on the run.  No science behind that, just personal opinion.  Real science is below:

Sun block or sweat block?
While use of sunscreen can reduce radiant heat absorption, many athletes are concerned that sunscreen will also hamper sweating. However, data from a 2000 research study published in the Journal Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness showed that use of sunscreen doesn’t affect thermoregulation — in fact, it may actually enhance overall body cooling. This data, while preliminary, should convince those who believe sunscreen will compromise their performance to start protecting their skin.

  • Schedule Your Run around the heat!  If you are able, try to avoid the hottest hours of the day when the sun is blazing.  Ideally speaking, its best to run before the sun rises or after it sets but I know that’s impossible difficult for many of us.
  • Slow Your Roll – This is not a good time for a PR, or even a killer workout.  When the heat is high, run by effort.  Do not look at your watch and get discouraged, just run at a comfortable effort.  If you are feeling hot, faint, weak or just “off balance” then don’t be ashamed to back off or even walk.  Remember that a good day is a day that you get home safely under your own power.  Nobody checks your watch to see how fast you were running BEFORE you passed out and needed emergency assistance.  Take your time and get home safely!

CUTE Summer Sandals for Plantar Fasciitis Support

Yes, I know it’s currently FREEZING in Chicago but Mother Nature can’t take away the fact that summer is coming!  The warm temps have been playing peekaboo with us for the last month and I have been starting to think about my feet more and more.  While most people equate summer with flip flop season unless they are a marathoner who currently doesn’t have many toenails some of us have foot issues that don’t mesh well with the Reef & Roxie movement.  Therefore, we need to be more concerned about what we slide into this summer!

I want you to know that just because your feet aren’t perfect, this does NOT mean that you  need to settle for something less than stylish for your summer footwear.  I went thru this last year with my Plantar Fasciitis while shopping at a “specialty” shoe store.  Needless to say, I didn’t care for any of the grandma “retro” styles and the sales lady told me that I was going to have to forget about style and think more about my feet.  WRONG!  Let get real, life is too damn short to walk around in ugly shoes!

So whether you are running a marathon, sightseeing, or heading the beach, please know that there are shoes available for your feet that fit, help keep your aches & pains in check and LOOK GOOD!  A few of my favorite functional & supportive sandals are below.   I know, you want to thank me.  You’re welcome.  And yes, this list is years in the making.

Birkenstocks –  Not just for hippies anymore!  When I was in college, these things were all the rage but I was less than impressed.  However, they have come a long way in the last 15-20 years!  My favs are the Gizeh style, which comes in 20+ colors ranging from $89.95 to $120.  Before you freak out about those prices, try to remember that you have a foot issue happening and you need to protect your feet.  Support and protection costs $$.  Sorry, it was hard for me too but I don’t like to be in pain sooooo I ponied up the cash for good sandals.  Pool Patent Gizeh’s below for $89.95.

I have an older model (Papillio Gizehs in black/silver) that I’ve worn now for a couple of years.  They have held up well, look cute and are my go to when I want something a little “nicer”.

birkenstock

My everyday flip flop & boating shoe is from Merrill, the old Lilac Thong which is available only at discount retailers now.  Several color choices, comfortable & they offer stability.  I didn’t like the braided piece so I cut mine off.  I have these in black & brown cuz I’m just that exciting.  Currently they retail between $56 & $80.  I paid $80 for mine from Merrill last year.  The current Merrill sandal styles are out now and available HERE.  Much better quality than what you will find in most “flip-flop” styles.image

If flip flops aren’t your thing, or maybe you plan to get a little down & dirty in your summertime footwear, Keen offers several nice options.  The Venice is a great shoe for multi-terrain wear.   It retails at $95 and is good in the water, in the mud or just wearing around town.  They have a lot of underfoot support including arch support, and a metatarsal ridge, which offers support  UNDER  your toes.  Plus they come in a lot of cool colors.  WINNING!  Thanks, Keen!

If you need something with a little more protection or if you plan to hit the trail hard this summer, then Keen knocked it out of the park with this Arroyo II.  This hybrid waterproof hiking sandal is the best of best, plus you can add your own insole if orthotics rule your world like they do mine.  You won’t find these in a bunch of fancy colors, this shoe is more about function than fashion.  However, if you’ve been on the trail as of late you already know that these are way cuter than those clunky hiking boots!  The Arroyo II is gonna set you back about $100 but they are heavy duty with big lugs and they come ready made to tear up your local trail.

A few newbies that just found their way to my closet, please don’t tell hubby yet, are the Keen Bali & the Keen Kona Flip.  Both are a little more reasonably pricee at $65 & $50 respectively.  However, don’t let that lesser price tag fool you, these babies still offer lots of protection to the foot, arch and the plantar fascia.  They are adorable and come in a variety of colors, offer good traction for the pool deck, dock or boat.  No worries if your little monsters kiddos are dripping water everywhere, you won’t end up getting wet til they send a giant splash your way you’re ready.

I hope this helps and gives you some ideas on alternative summer footwear!  Don’t let some nasty bitch sales lady talk you into buying something ugly in the name of foot health!  You have options!

If you’ve also been on the search for years to find summertime footwear that’s GOOD for your feet, please let us know about the good ones!
