The Comeback ….. Version 5.12

You’ve been there. You’ve done it. You’ll do it again, whether you think you will or not. Because there are times in our lives when fitness falls to the back burner, sometimes for good reason, sometimes because we mentally & physically just can’t make it happen. Whatever the reason, it will pass. And you will need to restart your fitness routine and make the comeback. It will be hard. You may be angry. But every mile you log is like a building block, paving the way back to sanity.

20141002-094033-34833697.jpg

This time has been a bit different for me. I’m wasn’t off due to injury. I didn’t have a baby. I just didn’t have the time to run much while we were preparing to relocate.  Then I didn’t run at all in the 6 weeks it took to move, make repairs to the “new” house and finally unpack & get organized. No matter, the result is the same and I was back at square zero before I even knew what hit me. I also have some extra “baggage” that I’m lugging around so I’ve been focusing on taking care of my entire body while rebuilding my fitness. Here are the things that I’m working on, just in case you need a shove nudge in the right direction too.

1) Watching what I eat. Say hello baked tilapia with cajun seasoning and tons of veggies! Protein shake, anyone? Water, YES, please!!
2) Limiting alcohol. Sometimes life as a working mom is slightly less than glamerous. Nobody says thank you. Nobody even really listens to you. In fact, can anyone even think with all the screaming and fighting chaos? There is work. Then house work. Then cooking and cleaning and laundry. Don’t forget those chauffeuring duties too!! Yes, at the end of the day, I understand the desire to crawl into a bottle of wine have a beer or two. But try to keep it chill! The more I drink, the more carefree I become, then I will blow an entire day of hard work by eating a bunch of crap before bed. Yep, been there, done that. So I try to limit the alcohol because it’s just easier for me to stay focused on my goals when my head is clear.
3) Workouts are a must. Log miles on the road, on the treadmill, on the bike.  Whatever you can do, just MOVE IT!!  Cross Train. Stretch. Roll. Ice if there is pain or soreness. Make regular appointments with your chiro or PT in order to keep you in line. When I moved, I was in a lull for a while without treatment and my Plantar Fasciitis flared up and I’m a hurtin’! I’m back on track now. Getting treatment. It still hurts very badly but I’m certainly more focused on the basics and taking care of my body. Good article from Gypsy Fit HERE on foam rolling!

20141002-100431-36271260.jpg

4) Break up your workouts into manageable chunks. If you don’t have time for 10 miles NOW, do 4 or 5 and then knock out the rest later in the day. It’s basic time management. I know that second workout takes a lot of willpower but you’ll get it done if you really need it.
5) Sign up for a race or three or four!! That will get you moving for sure! I was in the midst of moving and my friend Judy twisted my arm convinced me to sign up for our first marathon double. It’s in January. Suddenly, I’ve become VERY focused. I signed up for a “couple” races this fall in order to ensure that I’ll be ready to pound out two marathons in two days by the beginning of January.
5) Believe in yourself! This is definitely the most important thing. No matter what is going on in your life, take back control. Carve out time for you. Not only do you deserve it but you will be happier. And you’ll be a better wife, mom & person as a result. You are worth it and your family will certainly reap the benefits of a fit and focused momma!!

Routine is Key …..

As we all know, things are so much easier when we create a routine and stick to it. However, many of us are flying by the seat of our pants despite our best efforts to stay on schedule. Creating a schedule is an elementary idea. Super simple until you have to start squeezing every aspect of your life into those little boxes on a calendar. As you have probably already figured out ……. your family, job, workout routine, child chaffering services, cheerleading, refereeing, dog training, shopping, cleaning, cooking AND sleeping can’t all be squeezed into one little box. It’s a mess. The writing for one box is always encroaching on other boxes. Things are always falling out of MY boxes. In fact, sometimes things are hanging over the edge of the box and then slip out when I am least expecting it, like when I am trying to grab Michael something else that is attempting to JUMP from the box.

20140918-094312-34992313.jpg

Regardless, the schedule is messy and tricky and a total PITA until we get it mastered. So let’s brainstorm a little bit and come up with a few things that can make our lives calendars a bit more manageable!
1) Meal Planning. I really think this is at the top of the list. We, as mom’s, spend a lot of time cooking. We want healthy options for ourselves and any of our little munchkins who will eat the good stuff too, but we are so busy in the afternoon/evenings getting our little angels where they need to go that we come home exhausted at 8pm (or later) and basically collapse. If a meal hasn’t already been planned or started, its pizza again! Yes, again, like we probably already had it once this week. And while nobody in my house complains about pizza, it’s just not a great option nutritionally, or financially, if it is constantly a Plan B. So think about what you want to feed your family BEFORE the week starts. Get together ingredients for a couple crockpot meals if you are gone a lot for after-school activities. Make larger meals so that you can have leftover night & just reheat everyone’s favorite meal of the week. Buy individually wrapped/packaged fish fillets that bake in about 15 minutes for when you are in a hurry but still want something healthy. Don’t be embarrassed about buying the bagged salad because tossing a side salad on the table EVEN WITH PIZZA is better than breadsticks something starchy! Cut the corners where you need to but focus on overall healthy meals that taste good, are quick to prep and make the family happy.

20140918-102126-37286740.jpg

2) Get the run and/or workout out of the way BEFORE the day starts. I know we are all busy. And tired. And busy. Everyone wants to sleep as long as possible. But get out of bed and go do your workout early. This is really the only time for most of us. If it doesn’t happen before the day starts, it’s not going to happen at all because we are too focused on the family to take time back out for us. It’s too easy to decide to clean the house instead of go for a run. Or make a good dinner instead of heating up leftovers. I know. I’m right there with you. So get out of bed and go run or take yourself to the gym before the chaos ensues!

3) Give the kiddos chores. Sounds mean? Not at all, this is about life, responsibility, learning to help others. Divide & conquer the house cleaning, laundry and dishes! Don’t worry if things aren’t perfect and if the towels aren’t folded the way that you like, go read Runners World a book rather than refold those towels!!

4) Divide & Conquer! Don’t be afraid to ask your significant other for help. Some people still live in the dark ages where they think that the women need to do everything. And while your hubby may not be a rockstar house cleaner, laundry fairy or babysitter, LET THEM HELP! Send them to the store so that you can pick up the kids. Text them and ask them to put the laundry in the dryer and to “please” not dry your favorite running tights. LET THEM WATCH THE KIDS whether they like it or not while you run! This is super important ladies. The father of your children are FATHERS. They are partially responsible for your little angles. If you don’t let them help parent the kids, then they will be clueless and that’s on you. I know you are amazing moms. I know that you are superwomen and can do it all.  But sometimes just remember that you don’t have to do it all because you are part of a partnership. And if you are not part of a partnership, I can only hope that you have an amazing mother, BFF, sister or a network of women to help you because running a household while staying sane is not easy.

5) Be flexible and schedule in downtime! A schedule is only as good as the people using it. Realize that nothing is ever perfect. Nobody is perfect. Life isn’t perfect. And takeout pizza isn’t going to kill the family when you forget to turn on the crockpot before you leave for work if things go awry. Do your best to plan things out, use all your resources to balance the workload as much as possible but understand that shit things happen and be ready to roll with it when it arrives. That’s the secret to a busy schedule: flexibility. I also think its super important to have downtime. I try to keep Sunday’s open. No I don’t like Sunday birthday parties or movie dates or shopping trips. I want to stay home on Sunday and not do anything. I’ll probably be tackling my long run before the sun comes up but after that I’m showering, putting my jammies back on, making a big breakfast for the family and then hopefully finding my way to the recliner to watch movies or read. That’s it. I bust my butt all week in hopes for some downtime on Sunday.

Do you have any scheduling tips OR maybe the secret to end the chaos? If so, PLEASE tell us!!

Twenty-six point two miles isn’t enough anymore. At the center of this phenomenon is Joe De Sena, the driving force behind the enormously popular Spartan Race. De Sena offers a simple philosophy: commit to a goal, put in the work, and get it done. From that philosophy, as played out first in his own life and now for millions across trails, through mud, and up mountainsides, Spartan Race was born.

STOP! Wait! Let Me Take A Selfie!

I’m always significantly behind on my reading. Always. Last week I was reading an article in an old Runners World, that I had just unpacked, and it was on the subject of selfies. Apparently some people hate don’t like selfies. In fact, their loathing goes beyond the fact that they don’t take them, all the way to the fact that it makes them crazy that other people take selfies. Really? Interesting. But stop! Wait! Let me take a selfie!

20140909-131925-47965996.jpg

Then last night as I was driving home from the CHI, a couple radio personalities were discussing the most “hated” selfies. Apparently there is a list, compiled by a gossip magazine. What’s at the top of the list? The post gym selfie! And if you could see my newfeed from my TTF Facebook page or even my personal newsfeed, it’s overrun with gym/running/workout selfies. I may in fact be guilty of tossing a selfie or 10 up, just last month! But stop! Wait! Let me take a selfie!

20140909-132154-48114951.jpg

I find it interesting that something so harmless can get people so riled up. Apparently the selfie is considered something of arrogance. Some people think the selfie is about boasting. I saw a post on FB a couple days ago about how shocking it was that a person was able to actually get & stay in shape without documenting the process via photos on FB. Shocking. But stop! Wait! Let me take a selfie!

20140909-132511-48311272.jpg

Others think the selfie can be dangerous to others! No idea why. But stop! Wait! Let me take a selfie!

20140909-132651-48411525.jpg

On a more serious note, my friends aren’t taking selfies of themselves in bikinis, or when they are sick, or when they are drunk. They take/post selfies when they are out and about. To show their friends a cool trail they are running. To motivate the reader who may hate to run in the rain or snow, or sleet, or cold, or heat. To let their mom know that they are at mile 20 of the marathon that they have trained for all summer and that they are still alive. To send to the kids who want to know “if they are done running yet”. To be accountable for their training. To thank a sponsor or vendor who has helped them along the way. To inspire. To share. To be social. To document experiences. And if that’s wrong. Or bad. Or upsets people …. then I would suggest that person ….. Stop! And go take a selfie! It’s actually kinda fun!

20140909-134120-49280323.jpg

How about you? Yay or Nay on the selfies?

Starting Over …. Again

Life is cyclical. We all move thru a series of cycles. Some good. Some bad. Some just, well, different. Sometimes the outcome can be controlled with how we react to the situation. Other times, it can’t. Most of us have gone thru enough of these cycles to be able to roll with the punches manage them to the best of our ability. For that very reason, most of us are very familiar with the term “starting over”.

20140822-133533-48933716.jpg

It happens to all of us. And if someone says that they haven’t had to start over some aspect of their life then they are lying very fortuante. No matter how great life is, things happen. Injuries. Relocations. Burnout. Job stresses. The list is endless. As a result, we sometimes need to reset and restart when the storm blows over. There is no shame in starting over, just be committed and make it happen!

So if you are staring down a dreaded “restart”, do it now. Join me in rebuilding. I’m rebuilding my running & fitness routine. I hope what you are facing is something as simple as that but regardless, it’s time. Do it now. Breathe. Commit. Make a plan. Then come back and tell me all about how you TOTALLY ROCKED IT.

Yes, I’m Starting Over …… Again,
Amanda – TooTallFritz

Historic Auburn, IN – That’s MY Town!

I’ve been MIA for quite a while.  Moving the family, pets, a house and a pole barn stuffed full of cars and shit 200 miles away takes some time.  Actually finding a house takes a lot of time, then the actual MOVE is never-ending!  However, we are close to completion and it’s time to go explore this new town of Auburn, IN!   Let’s do this!!

Downtown Auburn Historic District

Auburn is a historically rich town known best for it’s work with the automotive industry; however, I’m here to tell you that there is a lot more to Auburn than cars!  The town is amazing.  It’s a small town that takes pride in its community.  The streets are well designed and groomed to make you want to stop driving and get out of your car for a stroll!  Lots of little shops, restaurants, antique stores, boutiques, ice cream & coffee shops around the square.  And flowers.  Lots of beautiful flowers and benches where one can stop and enjoy the views!  Plus there is a local farmers market on Wednesday’s & Saturdays!

Auburn Streets

Auburn hold frequent activities that are great for the entire family.  There are lots of old historic homes in the downtown area that are affordable AND cute (some may be for rent)!  Plus they still have a sense of community where Mom & Pop businesses not only exist but thrive.  Yes, both Mom & Pop still work the store, perform the service and are happy to chat when they see you in streets.  It’s a real sense of community with the courthouse sitting proudly in the middle of town.  And it still looks like a courthouse.  DeKalb County Courthouse below.

Dekalb Co Courthouse

 Dekalb Co Courthouse_2

I spent some time “running the streets” today.  I ran thru town admiring the streets and businesses.  To the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum  and the National Auto & Truck Museum.  Even found the location of a time capsule buried on the property of the ACD museum (go find it!!).

Auburn Auto Co ACD Natl Auto-Truck Museum

But as a runner, my biggest find was a short local trail, the Auburn-Waterloo Bike Path, that I can’t wait to run again, again and again.  The entrance is hidden in plain site on North Street, just east of Indiana.  It travels from North Street to Betz (1 mile), then follows Betz east a few blocks and picks up the path on the east side of 427 heading north toward Waterloo.  Please note that 427 is Main Street, which turns into Wayne Street in Waterloo.  Total distance is 4 miles from North Street to the end in Waterloo.  Nice little jaunt.  And do be careful of broken sidewalks/pavement on the trail/sidewalk along 427.

Rock n Roll Chicago – 2014 Half Marathon

I’m a big sucker for all things running but that doesn’t include events that are hyped up without delivering on the promised race experience.  In the past, I’ve ran Rock N Roll events but always walked away feeling like RNR got more from me than I got from them.  So when friends were signing up to run this 2014 Rock n Roll Chicago, I was hesitant but ultimately decided to suck it up join the fun.

RNR header

First order of business, packet pick-up. RNR Chicago is one of the only events in the CHI that mandates each participant pick up their own packets. Normally not a problem for me but it was a huge problem this year. While I did manage to pick up my own packet and as a result was late to the closing on my new IN home, I did hear from a “top secret” source that RNR does in fact have race day packet pick-up. Too late for me but hopefully this info will help one of you!!

Race day started bright and early with the gun going off at 6:30 am. Some might complain about this early start but with a July race in Chicago, I’d start even earlier if it were an option! There were 20,000+ participants, 34 corrals. However, corral placement was apparently “optional” and runners just jumped in wherever they wanted without any intervention from officials. Normally this would cause a real “cluster” effect but not here. The corrals were all spaced apart by 2 minutes and there weren’t a ton of people in each corral. So when our corral hit the start line it kinda felt like we were at the front, preparing to race for the win. I had runners all around me who should have been back an additional 10+ corrals but it didn’t bottleneck. In fact, I was in awe most of the race at how much space I had to run and how well the unmonitored RNR corral system actually worked.

Hitting the Start!

RnR start

I will say that I’m not a runner who needs music. I may turn it on when things get slow, then proceed to sing and dance my way thru the ugly miles. However, I rarely have headphones so this is sometimes annoying to other runners. Sorry, all!  I kinda expected that a Rock n Roll race would deliver, well, some rock n roll!  Not so much. There were some bands on course but not as many as I expected.  And some of the bands were singing the blues, so to speak. I would have liked a bit more pep from some of them. Oh well, maybe next year?

As for the course, I liked it a lot.  It was open and on decent streets. Aid stations about every 1.5 miles. One GU station. One sponge station. We did run on the Lakefront path for a short jaunt but it wasn’t too crowded. We even ran thru the tunnel under McCormick place and they added strobe lights and made it a fun and not too dark atmosphere.

20140721-163942-59982719.jpg

20140721-163943-59983335.jpg

For all of you bling chasers, the medals were super cool. Here is the SUN 5K and the half marathon medals. Plus they added a SAT 5K option for additional bling and that 5K medal was slightly different (less ornate than the SUN version).

20140721-164406-60246892.jpg

But for me, this race was about friends.  Here is a photo of Lisa (my BFF from way back), Rachel, Allison & I before the start.  Those two girls in the middle came to Chicago to run their VERY FIRST half marathon ever.  I didn’t want to miss that!  They killed it too!

RnR_friends

Aby, me & Nicki at the finish.  We have ran so many races together over the last several years.  And thanks Nicki for never complaining about Aby coming along even when it means we can’t get into the beer garden.

20140721-164341-60221916.jpg

So that’s a wrap for me.  I still think the race is overpriced compared to it’s Chicago counterparts.  I still think they should deliver more Rock n Roll.  However, it’s a great race on the streets of Chicago and well, you can’t put a price tag on making memories.

KOREBALL Review and Giveaway!!

The fitness industry is hot, hot, HOT!  The great thing about it being so hot is that we have new and amazing products coming out each and every day.  One such product is the new KOREBALL.  The KOREBALL is a great product for at home and on the go workouts.  In fact, it was specifically designed to be portable and ready to go wherever YOU want to take your workout.    How about the beach?  Yes, let’s do it!!

KOREBALLWhat is a KOREBALL?  It’s a hybrid of a kettlebell and a medicine ball.  Not as bulky and dangerous as a kettlebell.  Not as round and slippery as a medicine ball.  The KOREBALL has handles on the side to help you grip easily and stay in control at all times.  Plus it’s much safer around small children than both kettlebells and dumbbells.

KOREBALL_core work

I’ve been using the KOREBALL for several months now.  I have totally replaced my medicine ball with this newbie.  I mostly use it for side to sides, ab baskets and in place of dumbbells.  It’s so much easier to use this for dumbbell rows!!

I also really like the ease of filling and the portability.  I filled mine with water.  It’s at max capacity and weighs 11 lbs.  If you are looking for a little more weight, fill with sand verses water.  Watch how easy it is to set up!  20140717-102520-37520326.jpg20140717-102521-37521727.jpg20140717-102522-37522501.jpg20140717-102523-37523176.jpg20140717-102523-37523888.jpgThe website boasts the KOREBALL to be a collapsible, portable  “on the go” workout system.  I agree.  I mostly leave it filled so that I can constantly use it for workouts but this would be so easy to collapse and toss in a suitcase.  LOVE IT!!

KOREBALL has generously agreed to give one lucky reader a KOREBALL ($75 value).  To be entered in the giveaway, please comment below and tell us what type of equipment you use for strength work.  Body weight?  Kettlebells, dumbbells, or traditional iron?  Medicine ball?  Or maybe you just toss the kiddos around?

We will pick one winner via a random number generator on Tuesday, July 22nd. Please follow KOREBALL on Facebook for up to date news on special offers.    And if you can’t wait to win, buy KOREBALL HERE because it just might be on sale and there just might be free shipping as of right now (like this very moment).

Good luck!
