Self-Destructive Habits…..

As I was walking to work today, one too many people blew smoke in my face.  I was irritated.  Smoking seems to be the one bad habit of OTHERS that I can’t avoid.  I hope that I am wrong but smokers seem to just not care about the rest of us in their quest to get high off their nicotine.  They don’t care that they smell bad, or that their clothes and cars reek, that the smell of smoke lingers in an aura around them following them everywhere:  into their house, into their bedrooms, onto the train, into the office, on their children and everything they touch.  They not only smell bad but if you have had a relationship with a smoker you know the taste is also horrid.  It comes out of their lungs when they breathe, it’s not just on their breath, it’s INSIDE OF THEM and it’s impossible to get away from it.

Since I work downtown, I encounter a lot more people in a normal day than say somebody who just drives to their job, parks in the parking lot and walks inside.  Over the course of a 15 minute walk from the train to my office, I may encounter several thousands of people.  Those people are all shapes, sizes and have different interests and habits.  Those of us who take the train, know that we have smokers who are standing by the doors to disembark first and they light up immediately as the train doors open.  They take that first puff, which must be an amazing high since they can’t even wait to get off the train, and then they blow that smoke right back at all of us who are behind them.  Wow, great way to start my day by having to suck in somebody else’s smoke.  Somebody I don’t know, somebody I don’t like/love so I shouldn’t have to deal.  It sucks. I’m tired of it.

The smoking issue got me thinking about habits in general and specifically self-destructive habits.  Some of us have self-destructive habits that don’t affect others as much as say smoking.

Can you think of a few self-destructive habits that are somewhat common?  Here is the list which immediately popped up for me:

  • Smoking – Yuck, nobody likes this except the smoker themselves.  It’s a disgusting habit, uncleanly and affects others, it’s an addiction that apparently people can’t control, it kills the addict one day at a time.  Click HERE to find out more about how smoking is killing you or your loved ones.
  • Drinking in Excess – Alcohol leads to some good times…..sometimes too good!  I like it a lot; it doesn’t like me.  I have to be very careful with alcohol because my brain doesn’t have a stop button.  I’m probably considered an addict since my brain just keeps telling me to drink more and never gives me the stop signal.  Therefore, I have cut it out of “most” of my life.  Alcohol kills brain cells, leads to bad decisions, impairs memory/judgment/reactions.  It destroys the person from the inside out.  If you use alcohol every day and have been doing so for a prolonged period of time, click HERE to see what other people see in you:  slurred & slow speech even when you are sober, poor memory, difficult learning.  If you are a woman, you are even more susceptible to alcohol disease than men.  If you are a man and are taking your lady to the bar all the time for “dates”, you are killing her.  Maybe go for a walk, a bike ride, to a movie, or check out a local museum or festival.   Don’t be afraid to get creative; we like adventure!
  • Overeating –  Another one of my favorites!  I am a total overeater.  I am better now than I used to be but I still binge on holiday candy and overeat at meals.  According to WomenFitness.netFor some women overeating means bingeing and for others it means consuming more or other than planned. Most of us are overeating for a hundred different reasons. We are eating due to stress, irritation and frustration. It may be worry or overwork. We eat because our stomach feels ‘blah’. We are eating out of habit and with no real direction or thoughts about what we are doing with our face in the fridge.  Obviously, this is bad, it’s not healthy, and we can’t use food or smoking or alcohol to fix our problems, it just causes different problems!  Please go to the WomenFitness article HERE to identify overeating triggers and tips on how to avoid overeating.
  • Negative Thinking – Did you realize that negative thoughts are self-destructive?  Are you the person that see the glass half empty rather than half full?  I try to keep my family focused on thinking positive, which is really a full-time job.  I am constantly reminding them to “Think Happy Thoughts!”, “Be Happy”, “Smile”, “Be Nice”, “Tell me one HAPPY thing about today!”.  This is as much about me as it is about them.  I know that nobody is going to conquer the world by negative pessimism.  Click HERE to find out how to conquer negative thinking. You can honestly change your life by changing the way you approach things and by maintaining a happy, positive outlook on life. Don’t assume things are going to go poorly, assume that you are going to kick ass at everything you attempt!  You don’t have to be the best, but you will be BETTER by knowing that you are AWESOME!
  • Sleep Deprivation – Ha, Ha!  Yep, this too is self-destructive!  Not something that us busy people want to hear but we absolutely need to sleep.  While we are sleeping our body is repairing the damage we did during the day.  Your brain neurons and muscles are regenerating, your body is revitalizing itself to work hard for you when you awake.  Sleep Deprivation can cause memory loss, headaches, weakened immune system, and depression to name a few.  It was hard to find an article that was not “too” scientific in regard to sleep deprivation but if you need more information, there is a plethora of info and details HERE.

We could go on and on identifying self-destructive habits/behavior but the bottom line is that you get to choose your habits.  You pick.  Rule your life, don’t let your additions and bad habits rule you. Stop making excuses and using vices, or food, to provide temporary comfort.  Nobody is perfect so just deal with the situation and move on, you’ll be happier for it in the long run.  Speaking of “run”, lots of problems get sorted out when you exercise.  Go burn some calories and you may be surprised at how the problem that was so horrid “before the run” becomes just a bump in the road after a mile or two.  Take time to step back, cool off and focus on the “positive”.

What bad habits do you have that you are planning to kick to the curb?  Any advice for those of us who are struggling with some of the above habits?

Strong Enough!

You probably have a friend, or maybe you are THE friend who has self-esteem issues.  Confidence just isn’t their thing.  They are tentative about life, question their actions OR inactions and are just always unsure if they are good enough.  I am here to tell you that they are good enough, just the way they are, uncertainties and all!   As adults, life isn’t easy for most of us and coping is difficult.  You have no idea what has happened to them in the past or is happening to them now to make them feel insecure.  Avoid judgment.

It is difficult for those of us with an abundance of confidence to understand some insecurities but that really isn’t our place.  Our place is to reassure, try to help them shine and actually give a crap care about their feelings.  Let them know that NO MATTER WHAT……. they are:

  • Strong Enough
  • Tall Enough
  • Smart Enough
  • Thin Enough
  • Pretty Enough
  • Fast Enough
  • Good Enough
  • Tough Enough
  • Witty Enough
  • ENOUGH

to tackle anything they do so desire.  This is part of your responsiblity to humankind.  Help people step up, don’t knock them down to try to better yourself or  feel better about yourself because it just doesn’t work like that.  Karma will bite you in the ass for all of those little “nasties” which you think that nobody knows about.  Karma knows.  God knows.  Do the right thing.  Help somebody up rather than pushing them down.  Avoid pettiness and selfishness and you will be better for it in the end.

Go now and tell somebody, or look in the mirror and tell yourself, that they/you are Strong Enough and Good Enough just the way they/you are today, now, right here in this moment.  Nobody is perfect but own the fact that you are enough.

Drink Your Water!!

If you know me in real life or have been following for a while, you already know that I’m a water pusher.  I drink it all the time, all day long.  No soda for me, just water and beer.  I had a bottle with me non-stop roaming the streets of Miami and sitting on the beach.  I take a bottle of water to lunch with when I’m going out.  I’ve even been known to pull it out of my purse at a restaurant.  I have no shame.  I drink my water.

As the temps in the  CHI are particularly warm this week, I wanted to remind all of you to drink your water too.  Water is not only good for hydration but it also is a natural way to flush toxins from the body.  So put down the coffee and grab a bottle of water!  If you aren’t a water drinker, then this may be tough for you, so just start by focusing on getting 2 liters down per day.   Then as you get used to it, you can increase the volume if you like.  My preference is to drink 4 liters a day.  Usually I get in 3 and the 4th is questionable but the goal is 4.  I drink out of liter bottles, which I refill, so I know exactly how much I’ve had.

So as you go into this holiday weekend where alcohol consumption may be the center of your celebration, go in hydrated.  And don’t forget to get your long run in on Saturday so you don’t have to worry about it on Sunday after “celebrating” Saint Patrick’s Day.

Please see the article below to learn more about the benefits of water.

Spring Forward….

Yesterday was the first day of Daylight Savings 2012.  Being from Indiana, I have a love/hate relationship with Daylight Savings.  My entire life prior to moving to Illinois did not include changing the clocks twice a year.  Honestly, it just seems silly to me. While I understand the concept, it just doesn’t seem practical.  Apparently, somebody with a little power decided that it was getting dark too early so they passed a law to move the clocks back in the fall and forward in the spring.  Really?  Who sold that?  Now that was one damn good salesman.  Side note:  I would like to personally thank whoever came up with the “Fall Back, Spring Forward” slogan.  If not for that little diddy, I would NEVER know which way we were headed!

If you have kids and/or pets, you know that they have no regard to the hour on the clock so it is quite possible that YOU along with me are very crabby and tired today.  I feel dazed and confused.  What day is it?  What time is it?   Did that clock change automatically or do I need to change it?  Sitting here at my computer I see 3 different time displays which read drastically different times:  9:40, 10:02 & 8:40….hmmmmm, HELP!

My legs are also very tired today and I have a few minor twinges of pain/fatigue.  In the last 8 days, I raced a half marathon and a 5k, and I squeezed in a total of 50 miles.  Although this is totally unremarkable for some, this is very remarkable for me and my legs are definitely telling me anyone who will listen that they are whooooped.  I actually knew that before yesterday but that didn’t stop me from going out with Aurelia and hitting the trails in the beautiful sunshine.  We met up at  Yankee Woods and ran almost 11.5 miles.  I will let the photos speak for themselves.

Aurelia, stop & wave!

The Yankee Runners were also out and running hard.  We saw our fellow “Team Skirt” runner, Judy, and I begged her to stop for a photo.  Thanks, Judy!  Judy, Me & Aurelia:

I’m trying not to fall down into the ravine behind me:

Because apparently the 4 legged creatures don’t even go down there but run the ridge instead:

Aurelia flying back to the car, just down the hill then we are finished!!

After the run, I was shot, actually I was shot at about the 8th mile but as soon as I walked in the door of the house, Aby was adamant that we go out hiking.  Ummm, really?  Now?  Can we wait til after nap time?  No?  Okay, let me shower off fast and we will go hiking.  So off we went with Michael and Libby to the Monee Reservoir which is right down the road from our house.  They have some shorter hiking trails that are mostly grass.  The reservoir and wetlands surround the trail so if you go out that way, be prepared to get your shoes muddy!  The section we took was very scenic and just at 3 miles.

Michael, Aby & Libby:

Me & Libby:

A few Black & Whites.  I actually don’t care for black & whites but my camera was still mad that we had to get up early to go running so it deleted a few of my Yankee Woods pics and then switched to B&W for some of the Monee Reservoir pics.  Touché camera, you win.   Are we even now?

Libby taking Aby for a drag:

Libby wanted to be off leash sooooo badly.  However, we were in a busy area with lots of other people/dogs, close to a busy road and train tracks.  She is a bird dog and as most know, they are bird dogs first and pet’s second, so she can be so focused she “forgets” to listen to her mommy.  Plus, I can’t be a bird dog mommy and a human mommy at the same time without somebody losing out.  So she had to stay in the “people” area rather than thrashing thru the brush and water on the hunt.

It was lots of fun going to the Reservoir, so close to home but still a bit of a change for the kids and Libby.  They loved it.  Maybe we will try Goodnowe Grove next weekend!  We have stayed pretty close to home the last couple of years due to Mr. Michael’s age but he is much better at traveling and trying new things now.  Toddlers are fun, particularly once they are potty trained!  🙂

What did you do this weekend?  Were you able to get out and enjoy the weather?

The Little Things…..

In my real life, Miami Beach vacations are certainly not a thing of the norm.  In fact, had it not been for my momma & I’s traditional Leap Day trip to celebrate life, then I may have never seen the beauty of South Beach.  In my REAL LIFE  I cherish the beauty of the little things.  A few of the little things that I have been appreciating over the last several days.

The Ability/Flexibility to Try New Things

  • Mojitos – About 9 out of 10 people were enjoying these refreshing looking drinks while we were in Miami.  I decided to take the dare and try one even though I normally do not care for hard alcohol.  I thought I might get lucky since Mojitos have ingredients that I like:  lime, mint, rum.  Unfortunately, the end result didn’t work for me.  It was disgusting I didn’t like it at all.  I had trouble finishing it, which says a lot since half the glass was filled with lovely greenery.  Mojito – YUCK!
  • Birkenstock Sandals – I have never been a fashionista but I’m certainly not earthy either.  The Birkenstock craze was huge in college but I never jumped on the band wagon.  I mean, really, why would I pay the same amount of $$ for sandals as I would a good pair of running shoes?  It seemed insane at the time, particularly when they didn’t fit my “style”.  Well time changes almost everything.  I saw a pair of these babies in Miami and they have come a long way in the style department.  Plus when I slid them on my feet, they had a lot of support particularly for the Plantar muscle.  Sold.  Birkenstock – YAY!
  • Mom tried raw oysters!  Wow!  She is good about trying new things but let’s just be honest, raw oysters aren’t an easy sell.  She thought they were “good” but didn’t really understand the point of eating something that you aren’t supposed to chew.  Good point but I still like them.  🙂  Raw Oysters – ???

The Homecoming

  • Seeing the family.  As a busy mom, I loved going away for a few days and having zero responsibilities, being able to just lounge, do whatever caught my fancy, and being able to eat out at nice restaurants; however, by the end of the trip, I was also anxious to get home to the kiddos and hubby.  I missed the craziness of being with the kids.  And they loved the fact that I was home for about 5 minutes before they started fighting and making demands.
  • Sleeping in my own bed.  Who doesn’t prefer their own bed over any others?  I really don’t like to stay overnight anywhere other than my parents.  They have a good bed for me and Michael and it’s comfortable and I’m used to it since I stay there a lot.  But otherwise, I don’t even want to stay at a friend’s house because I am just not comfortable.  I normally do not do well in hotels either.  Thankfully the Miami hotel had a good bed and sleeping was good but normally, I’m not a fan.
  • My dog.  I have a Weimaraner, LibLib, who is my baby.  Unfortunately, Michael now demands more attention than her and OUR cuddle time is much less than pre-Michael.  However, I love this dog more than most people and I miss her when I’m gone.  She is my heart, soul, and my very best bed warmer.  No electric blanket needed, I have LibLib.

Back to Reality and a Schedule

  • I like a good schedule.  That’s how I get through life.  Organization and Time Management are key ingredients to Making It Happen.
  • Quality time with Aby.  It is always nice to steal some quality time with the oldest while hubby is picking up Michael by taking a short run.   Now that track season is on the horizon, all of a sudden, I’m more in demand with my oldest because she wants to go running to be in shape for the season.  I think we probably missed the “in shape” boat by a month or more but I’ll suck up take all the quality time I can get with her while she still likes me.  Last night we did a windy 3 miles on our country roads.
  • Wednesday Night F’N Runs.  Wednesday is now my favorite day of the week because I have locked it in as a Run Day with the F’N Running Club.  It certainly isn’t easy for the family to make it happen but we have somehow managed it for the last 5 months.  I am hoping we can continue to manage it, even with Aby’s track schedule.  We shall see.  But this week, I’m in and soooo looking forward to it!

What little things in real life to you cherish and try to appreciate?

Fun in the Sun – Miami – Part II

Yesterday was a huge day and I feel like we fit in as much R&R and fun as possible. The first thing on my list was a run so that I could attempt to acclimate my body to this climate a bit for the race. I know I don’t have enough time to acclimate properly but I at least wanted to know how I was going to feel. So I went out about the time the sun came up and it was just a beautiful day.

20120303-091723.jpg

I just ran/walked took some photos and just enjoyed the sights. I LOVED the performance of the Tough Chik tank in the heat. I never even noticed it was there which was a huge win. I also tested out a new (to me) product in the Mission Skincare line. They had a 5 hour anti-chafe cream that I compared to body glide. I am a body glide lover so was wondering how this would compare.

20120303-092117.jpg

I used it the day before while walking around town and didn’t love it. So thought I better give it a try on a low intensity run. It goes on like paste, and it’s sticky. The stickiness doesn’t really go away. I didn’t chafe but just felt sticky. So I guess it “works” but I prefer the feel and texture of the body glide.

After the run, mom & I had a light breakfast and then spent several hours under an umbrella on the beach.

<img src="https://tootallfritz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/20120303-092829.jpg"

Then shopping, lunch and general sightseeing fun.

Wow, it has been a beautiful day in Miami, FL. I feel so blessed to be here with my Mamma enjoying her company and this beautiful weather. Today we had low to mid 80s with a slight breeze and some definite humidity.

We booked out hotel thru the 13.1 Miami Beach travel agent and they totally HOOKED US UP! Yay!! Here is the view from our hotel room at the Shelborne South Beach:

Pitch Black

I realize on a daily basis that I am getting older. As my 38th birthday fast approaches, I know that I’m not “old” per say but rather things are changing faster than I would like. The last several hours in the car, driving in the pitch blackness of night listening to my fighting, screaming children has brought this even closer to the surface of my attention. Have you looked outside tonight? It’s dark. No stars. No moon. No light. Just black.

I have recently come to the conclusion that I do not like driving in the dark. I can hear the words of my NotSoTall Grandma Fritz in my head declining to drive in the dark. This is my fate. I don’t like it anymore, it makes me nervous and I can’t see anything at all!

20120217-210327.jpg

At slightly less than 38 years……it’s official I’m an old lady driver. Don’t ask me to go anywhere after dark, I will soon begin to politely decline. If you need my presence after dark, please contact my husband chauffeur.

How about you? Have you begun to notice any old lady/man tendencies as of yet?

Half-Assed….

This week has been a bit crazy.  I’ve been all over the board as to where I’m going, what I’m doing, and which problem has my main focus.  Quite frankly, I feel like I’ve done a half-assed  poor job with everything.  And yes, half-assed is a real word, at least according to the Urban Dictionary

1. half-assed

Doing an activity only partly, or without one’s whole self involved; doing something without caring, or without putting anything into it.

On Monday, I went to Running For Kicks and did “half” of their fun run.  Yes, I stole Gail’s photo again off the Running For Kicks facebook page.

I did 3.05 miles in the “hills”.  Since none of my girls were around, it was a bit difficult to find a partner at my pace.  Fortunately, Chuck took mercy on me and ran some 8:45s with me before I spun out and raced home.

On Tuesday, I did a speed workout with half of my attention capacity, the other half was back at my desk with my deadline work. I also had half the amount of energy I needed to MAKE IT HAPPEN.  And of course, I had half the time I would have liked, so it was super important that the dreadmill work WITH me and not against me.  And while I wasn’t as happy and cheerful as this chick below, I did okay.

It was  a very systematic workout that allowed me to zone out and not have to focus on too much of anything other than NOT getting thrown off the back of the treadmill.  And while I DO NOT recommend you do as I do, I will put my workout below just incase you need a starting point for increasing your speed a bit.  I’m supposed to be running much faster with longer intervals, I just can’t seem to muster it at the this point in time.  Therefore, I do what I can do on the given day and refuse to beat myself up over not being better.  All of the following was done at a 1.0 incline.

  • 1 min walk @ 4.0 mph
  • 3 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2 min SPRINT at 8.5 mph which was within seconds quickly downgraded to 8.0 mph
  • 1 min walk @ 4.0 mph
  • 1 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2 min sprint @ 8.1 mph
  • 1 min walk @ 4.0 mph
  • 1 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2 min sprint @ 8.2 mph
  • 1 min walk @4.0 mph
  • 1 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2 min sprint @ 8.3 mph
  • 1 min walk  @ 4.0 mph
  • 1 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2 min sprint @ 8.4 mph
  • 1 min walk @ 4.0 mph
  • 1 min jog @ 5.5 mph
  • 2  min sprint @ 8.5 mph (much better this time but still HARD for me!)
  • 1 min walk @ 4.0 mph
  • 3 min jog @ 5.5
  • TOTAL = 30 MINUTES!

Then yesterday was my normal Wednesday night run with the F’N Running Club.  I was very excited going in, even showed early to log some miles.

The sun was shining and I even had to scramble for a pair of sunglasses….thanks, Michael for letting me borrow your toddler “Mater” glasses!  However, I soon realized that I was only half focused.  I had  scheduled our local Virtual Run/Walk for Sherry Arnold  shortly before I  started running and the entire situation was just weighing on me.  Not just the horror of what happened to Sherry but of the fact that bad things happen to good people ALL THE TIME.  And it sucks.  Then the memories of past runners who didn’t make it home flooded my memory:  Chelsea King (age 17) from CA in 2010.  Patrick Mizwicki (age 14) from Lincoln Way East in 2011, a nameless woman, who has probably been forgotten by many, who was killed on our local suburban trails circa 2007/2008.  All traces of that news article has been swept away  because I REALLY looked for her name.  A lot weighing on me lately so I wasn’t my normal cheerful self by the time the FNRC showed up.  But we had a great turnout so that was awesome!  Left Back:  Kathy (who always looks glamorous and “made-up” to me), Lori (newbie!), Diane, Dawn, Aurelia, Rick, Maggie – MagMileRunner, Me & Brian.  Front:   Jeni – Sparkalish Roar & Meg.

It was good run but it’s hard to get those girls to slow down under that 8:45 mark.  I was dragging but made it thru.  My total for the day was 10.26 miles.  But I’m feeling it.  I have some soreness and not in a “good sore” type of way.  I need to rest today, and possibly tomorrow, so I can be ready for the weekend.

If you can make it out to our Virtual Run/Walk for Sherry Arnold (and every other missing/murdered/dead runner) then please come and join us.  We will be running in Frankfort, IL at 7:30am on Saturday.  Everyone is welcome; I’m even bringing my daughter.  I will do a brief Runner Safety talk before the run.  I’ll be brief, I promise!  Feel free to run as little or as far as you like….just come.  If you are not local, then print the bib HERE and do it on your own or get a group together in your area.  If you send me photos, I will post them all!

No Cheerleaders on the Homefront?

I am constantly reading blogs and/or facebook posts about how people are so lucky, and so in love with live, and how everyone at home is sooooo supportive of them and their endeavors.  Well, let’s get real for a minute.  I generally think the people posting over and over again that “Life is sooooo GOOD!” are lying wistful thinkers.  I immediately think they are trying to convince us, the reader, that their life is in fact as good as they would like it to be or possibly even more so, they are trying to convince themselves.  Please forgive me if your life really is “Soooooo Good!”.  Congratulations.  Really.  I am happy for you.    Cheers to all of your Sunshine & Rainbows!Life for the rest of us isn’t “always” sunny.  In fact, we sometimes (gasp) struggle.  We struggle with motivation, we struggle with our needs vs desires, we struggle with time management, we struggle with $$, we struggle maintaining sanity and not taking out our frustrations on others, we struggle with MAKING IT HAPPEN, we struggle with the fact that our hubby’s aren’t standing on the sidelines of every long run with the pom-poms.  Our lives are REAL and sometimes that means real complicated.  And messy.

I’m okay with that.  I don’t expect you to be perfect and please, don’t expect it of me or others in your life.  Know that it’s okay if your life doesn’t look as good on paper as your neighbors.  Know that it’s okay if you have to struggle to MAKE IT HAPPEN.   The important thing is that you are out there making the effort and trying.  Yesterday may not have been the best but focus on making today better.  And know that each day you get  a fresh start to do things differently than you did yesterday.

I encourage you to thank the Lord for the gifts you have been given.  I encourage you to acknowledge and accept that we are all different, have different lives and different circumstances.  I encourage you to Make It Happen FOR YOU, regardless of who is in your cheering section.

Cheers,                                                                                                                               Amanda – TooTallFritz                                                                              amanda@tootallfritz.com
